The tendency for everyone to break down politician's service records in detail is annoying . The admirable thing about serving is letting your country decide to use you in whatever way it sees fit whether its doing cool dangerous things, lame safe things or dangerous lame things.
Wait, you're talking about service records? Ha, okay, let me take y'all on a journey of Tom Cotton's stolen valor since this performative coward feels the need to attack great patriots like Tim Walz. Buckle up. Tom Cotton lied about an Army Ranger. (long thread)

Obviously the closer to the X you are the more important you are to the military and the cooler/more respect in the military you get but I'm not sure that translates well to being a political credential.

This is super inside baseball but military people do tend to be very touchy about their symbols. I really doubt though it's going to make much of an impact as a criticism to the general public most of whom barely know the difference between enlisted and officers.
Hey @Tim_Walz, this you? Do you often wear our crest even though you were only National Guard with zero deployments, never went through SFAS or the Q course, and by all accounts never even worked with Special Forces? Stolen valor much?

The American legal system is heavily reliant on prosecutorial discretion which usually tends to favor the rich and powerful.
Indeed, great damage was done today to the public’s faith in the American legal system. If a former President can be criminally convicted over such a trivial matter – motivated by politics, rather than justice – then anyone is at risk of a similar fate.

Thread and replies seem like a good survey of the views of religion or more specific Christianity on the left side of the political spectrum.

A preferable solution would be for American voters to drop the hero worship all together and instead understand the military enough to have an informed opinion about the use of military force and how many resources should be dedicated to it.
No one running for office should be allowed to tout ‘military service’ unless it was combat role. No more JAGs calling themselves ‘Iraq war veterans.’ Why? B/c Americans hear ‘veteran’ and think guy on front line. A guy who serves in safe role for politics made that calculation.

While patriarchy smashed might be an exaggeration it's good news that companies do not seem to be illegally discriminating based on gender.

Society has to make a clear choice and enact the appropriate policies around whether we want motherhood to affect women's careers. The status quo indicates we are fine with a motherhood penalty.
“Women and men are just as likely to be promoted, controlling for publications” But listen, a survey of 50,000 US scientists finds that motherhood inhibits output. So controlling for publications omits a major gendered obstacle to career progression. By @PMoserEcon et al

It won't ever go away by itself because current gender norms as well as the necessity of giving birth means that mothers have less time and resources to devote to their careers. The state would need to specifically direct resources to change that.

This piece accurately portrays the underlying criticisms of current medical practices for transgender minors and shows how the rigor of scientific evidence is crucial for policy debates. city-journal.org/article/mak…

Notably the studies on either side of the issues arent particularly strong but they are still used as rhetorical clubs The piece takes time to note the flaws of how ideological opponents use studies but glosses over the very real limitations of studies that support his position

It's a tad confusing how many of the people most scared of AGI are also the ones invested in making it happen.
I’m scared of AGI. It's confusing how people can be so dismissive of the risks. I’m an investor in two AGI companies and friends with dozens of researchers working at DeepMind, OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google Brain. Almost all of them are worried. 🧵

I have a dream that one day people from different statistical fields like mathematical statistics, econometrics, psychometrics and machine learning will have a conference every 10 years or so to standardize terminology and coordinate notation. It would be a golden age.

My team @CommonApp is hiring!!! apply.workable.com/j/6B08D29… In my very biased opinion, hard to find a better balance of (1) impactful, exciting, and far-reaching work (2) committed+caring colleagues (3) exceptional work-life balance (fully remote!) (4) phenomenally generous benefits
