🍎 @ErsteBankOpen 🇦🇹 x 🍒 @SwissIndoors 🇨🇭 | ATP 500 Tournament Preview 🎾
We crowned three champions this weekend, but the race to Turin is entering one of its most pressing weeks.
Medvedev took Almaty, Griekspoor took Brussels and Musetti took Lyon, and the tour barely paused to celebrate before turning toward Vienna and Basel. These two 500s run side by side, with fields good enough to pass for a Masters.
Paris comes next, then Turin, and the math is getting tight. Medvedev sits sixth in the race, with Cobolli, de Minaur and Tiafoe chasing him, all in the same Vienna draw. In Basel, Fils, Jodar and Fritz are fighting for spots, while Djokovic, 11th at 39, is trying to qualify for a record 19th time.
But the stakes raise even higher. Above it all of it sits an even bigger prize. With Sinner not back to defend his Vienna title, Zverev becomes world No. 1 for the first time in his career if he reaches the quarterfinals, two wins from a sentence he has spent the better part of a decade chasing.
The two buildings housing these storylines are cousins, both quick and both under a roof; Basel just has less patience for small talk.
And that's enough small talk from me. Without further ado:
🍎 Vienna has a way of collecting the tour’s best indoor players. Zverev won it in 2021 and lost last year’s final to Sinner in three sets. Medvedev won it in 2022 and reached the final again a year later, Rublev took the 2020 title, and Khachanov was the runner-up two years ago. This draw is a murderer's row of players who know exactly how the building plays.
It plays the same way almost every year. Vienna has rated between a 64 and an 81 every season since 2018, and it projects to a 71 this week, a few points under the indoor average.
It’s still a quick court, and the serve still carries weight, but returners get a slightly better look than they will in Basel. With fields this deep, the scorelines have stayed short, as fewer than half of the last three years’ matches cleared 21.5 games.
That balance has suited the players who take time away from their opponents, and Time Thieves have beaten the market on courts like this over the past year. Zverev is one. After more than a week off since his Shanghai semifinal, he returns to a room he has already won in, with the ranking he has chased his whole career on the line.
Alcaraz is the unknown. He’s back in Vienna for the first time since 2021, hasn’t played since a third-round loss to Bergs in Shanghai on the 12th, and arrives as rested as anyone near the top of the draw.
Medvedev arrives as the opposite. He has played 14 matches this month across Beijing, Shanghai and Almaty, the last of them a comeback from a set down in Sunday’s final, and he comes down from 810 meters of altitude straight into a race where he can’t afford to give up ground.
Griekspoor carries a long week of his own, having gone the distance in four of five matches to win Brussels. Musetti, fresh off the Lyon title, has already withdrawn.
Fatigue is easy to overrate on day one, though. Since last summer, players coming off a final are 28-12 in their next opener, slightly better than the market expected. The second and third matches, when the legs have to answer twice, are the ones worth watching.
🍒 Basel is and will always be the house that Federer built. He won it ten times, and the tournament has always carried the feel of a Swiss homecoming, which gives this year’s goodbye (Stan) even more weight.
The floor turns the dial up a notch from Vienna. It has played like an ice rink three years running: an 82 in 2023, off the top of our scale (literally) in 2024 and a 91 last year.
Holds, tiebreaks and overs come with the territory. More than a third of its sets over that stretch went to a breaker, and nearly two in three matches cleared 21.5.
The recent finals have followed the floor, until last year. Auger-Aliassime won the 2023 title in two tiebreaks over Hurkacz, and Mpetshi Perricard beat Shelton in 2024 in a final between two big servers on the fastest version of this court. Last year broke the pattern, with Fonseca beating Davidovich Fokina in a final between two baseliners.
Shelton returns as the top seed, two years after that final and six weeks after losing the US Open final to Zverev. He has had two weeks to rest since Shanghai, and few players on tour are built better for this room.
The rest of the top of the draw comes in with heavier legs. Fritz played Sunday’s final in Lyon, Struff played the one in Brussels, and Fils arrives as the second seed after losing a third-set tiebreak to Struff in Saturday’s semifinal.
Djokovic has history here too. He won Basel on his debut in 2009, beating Federer in the final, and hasn’t been back since 2011. Rested since the 9th and 12-1 under a roof since 2023, he arrives with a Finals spot to chase and nothing left to prove in this building.
Wawrinka gets the last word. At 41, the three-time major champion plays the final tournament of his career in front of a Swiss crowd that has spent two decades watching him play in Federer’s shadow and out of it, and whatever the draw says, Basel will be his week too.
Let's see if we can keep our momentum going. Thank you so much for reading if you made it this far, please share your feedback with me, and, as always:
Best of luck, Super Team.

Tennis ran tundra cold, so we ran to the homie @JM3Hoops for an NBA Cup lock.
Like the Mailman, he delivered.

Bummer of an L that's leaving me feeliing pretty stupid, but--as you can tell from the Player DNA--Jiri Lehecka is vulnerable, by the data at least, on quick courts and against Servebots.
Since 2023, Lehecka is 7-13 against Servebots (market expected 12 wins) and only 23-19 on indoor hard (where the market expected 28 wins). He's also underperforming by about 2 wins on all fast courts.
Notwithstanding that data, I really felt the market loved him way too much and felt like we had a big, big inefficiency to catch on the heels of how little the market knows about Kym (who, to his credit, is very good on quick courts and indoors and looked to be in remarkably healthy form).
That was obviously wrong. I'll own it, but felt this was an excellent spot to lean into BLENDER.

Shelton handed him that W yesterday, you felt lehecka would do the same ?
@ATPScamAlert 11-10 against net rushers, -2 wins against expected.

de Minaur moved back on his 2nd serve returns in his win over Berrettini
Alex's contact point on 58% of his 1st serve returns was within 2 m behind the baseline, while 100% of his 2nd serve return contact points were 2+ m behind the baseline

🍏 #ATPBasel 🇨🇭 x 🍓 #ATPVienna 🇦🇹 | Friday Card 🎾
Back 2 work:
🍏 3U 🇫🇷 Arthur Fils ML (-104/1.96)
🍓 2U 🇦🇺🇮🇹 De Minaur-Berrettini U22.5 (+108/2.08)
🍏 1U 🇨🇭 Jerome Kym ML (+245/3.45)
Couple notes:
I know it's not the most clear from the BLENDER Report, but the lynchpin of the Fils trade relates to Fritz's demonstrated struggles against Heavy Ball Hitters. I don't think this court saves him.
Not enough data on Kym for an interesting BLENDER Report, but fading Jiri Lehecka in these conditions is a must, particularly with how Kym performed today. Attached the Player DNA card if you're interested in what we know about Jiri.
Best of luck, Super Team.

On the heels of thinking “I can’t get any more degenerate” after nuking a visibly injured Fils.
FWIW, it looks like my analysis missed pretty bigly today. My #1 "love this spot more than all other spots" play is Demon on the ML. BLENDER and I agree.
Might be a strong fade spot for the h8rs (and I will be EBBing on Demon the second i get a live opportunity).
Godspeed.
Hey Jerry, some advice: maybe don’t get broken from 40-0 this set.
Very unofficial, very degenerate, very SmoothMan.
See yall in hell.
It’s weird because you’re victory-lapping a player’s injury as something that should have been expected.
Some facts: Fils hasn’t retired from a match since May 2026 on clay. He’s played consistently well all year, well enough to be a near-lock for Turin.
No, it doesn’t matter that he played a three-set match against Alex Michelsen, someone who plays him very well (like he did as recently as, idk, last week). In all cases, Fils is 9-3 this year after playing a three-set match.
Your other points run the double fallacy of being both illogically conclusory and factually wrong.
Taylor Fritz is typically strong on fast courts, but there’s a limit and Basel might be too fast. Fritz is 5% worse on serve+break in Basel; Fils +2. Fritz has demonstrably struggled against players with Fils shot profile, including on quicker courts (Tsitsipas), including indoor courts (Musetti). including recently (see, eg., id.).
You are the public, big dog.

lmao how is that weird, for a guy who’s never been fit at all, and who went to 3 battling sets and almost lost to Michelson yesterday, when Fritz is fresh and his serve has been untouchable all week? not saying it was a bad play but to take his ML with all the factors I listed 😂
Think Fils maybe tweaked his back. Even if he didn’t, it’s 100% in the back of his mind. With his home masters approaching in days and Turin all-but-secured….

Sold 180 early at match point 5-3 bc I was afraid of disaster but what a hit on @thetailgateapp
I’m truly just an injury farming merchant these days.
Also when I posted odds were around +225 I just happened to be watching bc I took before that.
Hope some of you cashed with Wiz 🧙♂️

Yeah I’m in at +488 for a grand and I’m letting it ride too. Would LOVE this win. I’d be elated. Feel as if I’m never on right side of injuries and retirements too especially after losing 1k on a lay with Sakamoto.
Lol
If you’re a sports bettor, read this:
Your goal always needs to be the lose the least, not win the most.
In a perfect world, you’re placing 1 bet a day. If there’s nothing you like, then 0.
The more bets you place every day doesn’t increase your chances to win the most, it increases your chances to lose the most.
Less is more.
