If you were to look at a map of San Francisco, it’s easy to see that cutting off the only western traffic corridor that allows commuters to avoid Golden Gate Park would increase congestion. Instead of spreading out traffic evenly the permanent closure of the Great Highway has created concentrated bottlenecks in other parks that have roads such as Golden Gate Park, the Presidio, and many across the city. A weekday compromise could help elevate congestion and increase overall walkability in one of the most park friendly cities in the US.
Replying to @behindthenet
Scott Wiener also passed SB 922 which allowed the road to park conversion work on the GH to move forward without a full Environmental Impact Report. When you add that to the fact that the closure increased traffic in Golden Gate Park it makes you wonder how much the environment plays a role in the closure.

In case you didn't know, the SF Bicycle Coalition is responsible for the permanent closure of the Great Highway. Lucas Lux and his nonprofit executives are members of the Bike Coalition. They take turns to serve on City Hall's Bike Advisory Committee. The Bike Advisory Committee gives bicycle activists access as insiders to influence SFMTA and other city agencies on transportation policies and projects. Pushing road closures using your tax dollars.

We can deal with this on weekends, but can we share access on weekdays? Keep San Francisco moving on weekdays, let people get to work and kids go to school. Vote YES on G. Share and compromise. And this 👇 multi-year project. sfpuc.gov/irving-street-and-…

Nobody supported that project, not even Scott Wiener. The project was a joke and the developers were criminals

Damn. I knew Portola and Excelsior would be reasonable people and therefore Yes On G, but I had no idea the depth of support in the Outer Mission. TONS of folks and merchants around Ocean supporting us. They know the damage done to working people who used Great Highway *multiple* times a day for their work --contractors, plumbers, etc-- and they've decided the compromise (road M-F, park Sat/Sun) makes good sense. My voice is hoarse from saying 'thanks for your support' too often. I need a lozenge. You, on the other hand, can speak up by supporting the cause at: greathighwayforeveryone.com

San Francisco: Connie Chan has many flaws, but she recognizes things that normal everyday working-class people want. Normal people, most of all, don't want to be harmed. She recognizes how the things YIMBYs want, such as tearing down infrastructure WHILE adding population density, will harm most people, so she simply refuses to go along with them. Not harming most people is a good way to get most people on your side. Therefore, I predict she'll win handily in parts of San Francisco where YIMBYs are most intent on causing harm.
Connie Chan basically opposes all the same things that the tiny group of Republicans in San Francisco do. She doesn't want new housing built. She doesn't want urban freeways removed to reconnect neighborhoods. She doesn't want anything done that might even temporarily inconvenience a suburban car commuter or an incumbent homeowner. It's not a surprise she'd be leading with Republicans.

A person who hates yimbys is an anti-yimby, not a nimby. Peter Thiel's sycophants control yimby in SF, & literally just tried to foist a dude with numerous SA allegations on us right after removing oversight of Flock cameras in the city. Who wouldn't be anti-yimby at this point?
And the prize for which group has some of the worst politics in America goes to Left-Nimby's

Nobody in DSA should be calling someone a nimby. Yimby is a right-wing astroturf movement funded by the worst people in the world. It is highly reactionary to buy into their framing
Yes you are a nimby of you oppose new housing construction

Almost $49,000 for hammocks on the permanently closed Great Highway? Records from a Sunshine request filed in 2025 list $48,714.26 in hammock-related costs: $46,040.46 funded by the 2020 bond, plus $2,673.80 in donated replacements. 👇 And that's only the tip of the iceberg when it comes to spending for the asphalt. The same 2025 records list another $66,272.24 for fitness equipment alone. SF Rec and Park later approved $500,000 for fitness center in 2026. While the "absolutely no sharing" supporters keep bragging about their "gift" to San Francisco, taxpayers deserve transparency about where our tax dollars went. Nobody asked the city to pay overtime to remove the traffic signals overnight. Now, the cost of replacing them is being used as an excuse to block sharing the public road. Are we supposed to believe the city didn't know it would cost $9 million to replace them before removing them? There's always tax dollars to fund projects favored by the insiders. What about the people? SoMa neighborhood was told there was no money for a park after families had patiently waited in line for more than 12 years. Meanwhile, the "absolutely no sharing" group was able to skip the line, secure city funding, and receive expedited approval to keep the asphalt exclusive. missionlocal.org/2025/09/sf-… Where is the fairness? The privilege is real. Vote YES on G. Share the road. Safe streets and great parks. SF can have both.

Larry, this proves Rec & Park's total numbers are obviously screwed up. If they claim Calif accounts for 95.9% of the 486,006 visits over a 12-mth period, then total visits for the year would have been 506,798 (486k/.959). So, where did Rec & Park's 1.7 million figure come from?
New from me: I've gotten Park and Rec data regarding who uses 'Sunset Dunes' and who doesn't. It seems the dark green bits of the map below, who went 70+% in favor of closing, represent 35% of the city but only 18% of visits. The Great Highway on a weekday. 👇 Perfect weather, yet the asphalt road is empty, because people are at work, and kids are in school. 20,000 daily commuters did not disappear. Why keep this 2-mile public road closed to working class families who need access? The sand still moves, and maintenance costs haven't disappeared. SF taxpayers already paid to maintain the traffic lights. Why remove them overnight and now use the $9 million as cost of replacing them to inflate the price tag for the Compromise? With concerns about collisions on the closed roadway, how do fancy signs and snail drawings address real safety needs? Public money should fund practical solutions that protect lives. Not investments that fund posh, privileged lifestyles for a few. The permanent closure puts ideology ahead of everyday needs. Working families deserve consideration, safe routes, and transportation options. We can share the Great Highway. Weekday road access and car-free weekends and holidays. That's a fair compromise. Vote YES on G. What's the compromise? greathighwayforeveryone.com/ Follow the money. campaign.sfethics.org/electi… More road closure immediately after the election: sfpuc.gov/irving-street-and-…

This is the Great Highway Compromise. 👇 Share access for everyone on weekdays. 20,000 daily commuters could use the Great Highway while cyclists used the bike lanes on both sides, and people walked their dogs and enjoyed ocean views from the elevated paved pathways. Weekends and holidays remain car-free for recreation. That's a fair share. For years, people shared 2-mile Great Highway and made the compromise work. The Sunset Dunes park is 50-acre, not 2-mile. Why insist on absolutely no sharing and absolutely no compromise? There's enough room for everyone. San Francisco can have both safe streets and great parks. SF can Compromise. Vote YES on G. greathighwayforeveryone.com/
