spacex mentioned in their latest earnings call that they’re investigating modular inference clusters. the mechanical engineering behind warehousing compute is already hard, so why would they go through the effort of making the challenge more difficult by making their compute modular (portable and sized for transportation)?
1. electricity cost: as an example, electricity prices can vary by 10x within texas alone. being able to pick up your compute and move it allows you to take advantage of the electricity market. ai inference is a rare commodity where supply is geographically disconnected from demand. you can take advantage of dirt-cheap electricity and still serve compute to high-cost-of-living markets like nyc with negligible performance impact (latency)
2. labor: one of the factors going into the placement decision is whether or not you can staff the facility. logistics companies like ups, fedex, and walmart fight with this constantly. it's a large factor in deciding where a new facility will be located
3. upgradability: a huge part of designing these facilities is planning for future expansion or upgrades. modularity lets you define standard interfaces, which makes ripping out and replacing "units" of the warehouse easier than treating it like a brownfield project to upgrade. it's extra work on the front end to define and standardize these interfaces, but doing so pays off in the future
4. cost and scale: it's cheaper and faster to scale from 1x to 1,000,000x with a modular design by just connecting units together rather than designing for your target scale through greenfield or brownfield development. you also get economies of scale (wright's law) with this method. remember: there will be factories producing these "units". need more compute? stamp out more units. no need to customize. interestingly, this also reduces risk by pushing capex commitments further down the line when more information is available. if ai is what we think it is, just make more units. if it isn't, just make fewer
5. performance: the primary limiting mode of heat transfer in these systems, regardless of whether they are open-loop or closed-loop, is convection, not conduction or radiation:
qDot = hA(T_out-T_in)
qDot is your heat transfer rate (roughly, how much power it takes to cool the system)
h will always be the same (with fluctuations depending on external factors like humidity that you can't really control)
A (area) you can't change -- it's effectively your "fin," which is set
and T_out is effectively the surface temperature of the chips you're trying to cool
this leaves T_in -- which, for closed-loop systems, is roughly geographically independent. but for open-loop systems...
anyways, all of this comes together to make sense. interestingly, tinycorp is doing this too with their exabox. tiny has a lot of engineering challenges with their thermals and have real challenges with 4 and 5, but spacex will be able to

SpaceX Q3 earnings call was yesterday.
$14.6B revenue, +161% YoY 🚀
Super Intelligence hit $7.56B — now the biggest business.
Starlink $5.25B.
Starship flew its first paying mission.
On Flight 15 they plan to catch the ship (keep your eyes open for a song about it 👀). That will be the first time an orbital launch vehicle is fully recovered. A major milestone and a necessary step to becoming muti-planetary. Next year Starship will be able to launch two or more times per week. Incredible! 🤯
Elon called Grok Bot the fastest-growing product he’s ever seen. I have 100+ bots and run many of them every day. Grok @Bot is only getting better and better. Soon it will also be available for companies. I hope that a big percentage of companies will be using it sometime next year.
The future is really exciting! I also like this button, there should be a button like this in every @SpaceX rocket to be able to talk to Grok about the true nature of the universe or any other question the astronauts might have.
Excitement for the future is 100% guaranteed! 🔥

SpaceX Starlink Mission
October 20, 2026
SpaceX's Falcon 9 is targeting the launch of 27 Starlink satellites to low-Earth orbit from Space Launch Complex 4 East (SLC-4E) at Vandenberg Space Force Base in California.
A live webcast of this mission will begin about 10 minutes before liftoff, which you can watch here and on X @SpaceX.
This will be the 36th flight for the first-stage booster supporting this mission, which has previously launched Sentinel-6 Michael Freilich, DART, Transporter-7, Iridium OneWeb, SDA-0B, NROL-113, NROL-167, NROL-149, NAOS, and 26 Starlink missions.
Following stage separation, the first stage will land on the Of Course I Still Love You droneship, which will be stationed in the Pacific Ocean.
Residents of Santa Barbara, San Luis Obispo, and Ventura counties may hear one or more sonic booms during the launch, but what they experience will depend on weather and other conditions.

Elon Musk on SpaceX-Tesla merger possibilty on the earning call yesterday.
He confirmed both companies have independent special committees examining a merger, he personally thinks combining them makes sense for Super Intelligence software, chips, Terrafab, robotics and Starlink, but it is not guaranteed and would require a high bar of 50% of all Tesla shares voting yes.

Lots of recent discussions and analysis of hyperscalers and neoclouds. In this earnings call, Brett Johnsen, SpaceX CFO, chooses to mention about SpaceX's "extreme vertical integration" and their talking to "pools of dead capital". Seems like there is SpaceX and then everyone else for AI (terrestrial) infrastructure

Elon Musk's statement on the "super intelligence singularity":
During the Q&A, when asked about a potential SpaceX-Tesla combination, Musk responded that special committees of independent directors at both companies are discussing it.
He added: “But I do think there’s a lot of merit to combining the companies as we are pretty much in the super intelligence singularity. And there’s a lot to be gained from cooperating on developing super intelligent software, chip design, the Terafab, obviously, robotics, mass to orbit with the Starmind constellation [and] Connectivity.”

If you missed it, Elon explained he has waiting buyers for the entire SpaceX AI compute capacity currently available 3X over... expects 1000x growth in demand over the next few years due to a proliferation of AI bots... and sees a payback period of just 6 months on any new compute capacity built.
These points to the largest financial numbers of anything anywhere ever.

Main takeaways from SpaceX’s earnings call today
> AI is now SpaceX’s biggest business: The Super Intelligence segment, which rents computing capacity to customers including Anthropic and Google, brought in $7.6B, nearly triple its $2.56B in the second quarter.
That made it SpaceX’s largest revenue source, ahead of the $5.2B Starlink connectivity business, with $608M coming from the newly acquired Cursor.
> SpaceX swung to a profit: Net income reached $4.4B on $14.6B of revenue, up 161%, against a $1.1B loss a year earlier and a $541M loss in the second quarter. Even so, SpaceX still showed a $413M net loss for the first 9 months of 2026.
> A SpaceX-Tesla merger is under study: Committees of independent directors at both companies are discussing a combination at shareholders’ request, and Musk said he is excluded from those talks as a conflicted party. He called a merger a good idea but said it isn’t certain, and any deal would need support from a majority of all outstanding Tesla shares.
> Musk sees revenue multiplying: Musk projected annual recurring revenue of $500B to $1T by the end of 2027. SpaceX’s own guidance is far lower in the near term, with $100B in annualized revenue by the end of 2026, based on December sales, and $33B to $37B of revenue in the first quarter of 2027.
> Spending is outrunning revenue: Capital spending hit $19.6B in the third quarter, $16.4B of it in the AI segment, and SpaceX expects $35B to $40B in the fourth quarter. Musk said SpaceX prefers short-term compute contracts because he expects each watt of computing to earn more as AI models improve.
> Musk is working from Memphis: Musk said he often spends 4 days a week in Memphis bringing the Colossus II supercomputer online, as SpaceX adds roughly 200K Nvidia GB300 chips a month. Compute capacity stood at 1.7GW at the end of September, SpaceX expects 2.5GW to 3GW by year-end, and Musk said he is confident of adding 10GW during 2027.
> Louisiana launches are expected by 2029: SpaceX recently announced plans for a $100B spaceport in Louisiana, and Musk said the internal goal is a first launch there within 2 years, while 2029 is highly likely, with launches at scale that year.

1:02:00 interesting discussion for NeoClouds. Compute per Watt is only increasing with model capability. GPUs will rent higher as models continue to improve (exponentially). In a crazy scenario where frontier model companies default $CRWV $ORCL $NBIS and other AI infra providers will benefit by getting out of these long term lower contracts and being able to take advantage of the higher spot market (which will go higher)!
