On this day in 2001, Disney's River Country closed. It was initially expected to reopen seasonally but never welcomed guests again. The park sat abandoned for nearly 18 years before being demolished, and the area is now where Lakeshore Lodge is being built. It opened in 1976, was themed, and was Walt Disney World's first water park. It used filtered water pumped directly from adjacent Bay Lake into a sand-bottom pool system. Attractions included slides like Slippery Slide Falls and Whoop 'n' Holler Hollow, rope swings, barrel bridges, and a white-water rapids ride
