Convincing people with six teeth to defend people with eight yachts may be the greatest political con job in modern history.

i’m going to say something brave.
talent pipelines should die. not every career needs a feeder school, feeder job, etc. people should be able to try things, learn on the job, and change direction as they grow.
we’ve optimized the serendipity out of professional life.

The preoccupation with "the job market" in college reflects what "education" amounts to under capitalism: job training. Forget everything else: history, politics, culture, just knuckle down & work today in preparation for a lifetime of work after graduation. "Education"?

All anyone talks about with El-Sayed is Israel. But his position on capitalism is the most articulate and intelligent of anyone in public life today.
He's literally the only capitalist calling for the size of reform our system needs in order to become truly free, truly fair, truly competitive.
One reason socialists have made such gains is that except for El-Sayed they're the only ones calling out the level of desperation and powerlessness most Americans feel. But out of ignorance or ideology, the socialists are unable to see that America will never give up capitalism, and that socialism has never, ever, created prosperity.
El-Sayed is describing exactly how capitalism can do it.
MUST-WATCH: "Until they drive prices UP... Americans aren't complaining right now that prices are too LOW."
@AbdulElSayed masterfully schools Bari Weiss' CBS News(max) 60 minutes host @Douthat60 on the problem with living in corporatism, not capitalism -where monopolies and oligopolies reign supreme - and the importance of backing politicians who support the ability of labor UNIONS to push back so workers can earn more and live better lives... rather than politicians who are owned by corporations. He never made much money on his art. He was one of a handful of artists who created an entire universe of music and culture.
The people who got rich off of it were white artists like Calvin Harris, Tiesto, Diplo, and David Guetta, and corporations like Goldenvoice.

At this point in the IS at least, anything you do other than consulting, big law, or inheriting wealth leads to diminished income. Why are some people so focused on Academia as the problem instead of as a symptom?

Honestly I just looked at the accumulated mess of decades of physical clutter of tapes, DVDs and thousands of records, groaning bookcases and shoeboxes of old flyers taking up space in my tiny apartment, asked myself if it "sparked joy" and said "of course".

one of the most important things you learn in college is that there might be more important things in life than making money

I’m sorry it is simply not your professors’ jobs to make sure you get sufficiently stable or high paying work after college & the endpoint of this notion is funneling even more students into finance and consulting and other bullshit jobs

I learned how to teach literature from TV and movies. If I am teaching Shakespeare, I first write "Globe Theatre", "catharsis" and "pentameter" on the blackboard. Then I read a line aloud and ask the class what they think Hamlet meant when he said that

Rest in Peace Juan Atkins “the godfather of techno.” His unconventional sounds became the blueprint for an entire new genre of music, influencing generations of producers, DJs and record labels, like ours.
“I don’t know how you can love music and be close-minded... Life would be boring if you just adhered to the same protocol every day, so there are guys like me out there championing the cause for different and alternative ways of life and listening to music.” Juan Atkins

it's also not necessarily true. "critics are just failed artists" only holds if you don't consider criticism an art, and i personally side with Oscar Wilde in saying that it is. Many reviews are greater artistic achievements than what they are reviewing!
