JEWISH COMMUNITY GROUPS WELCOME ONTARIO ACTION TO HOLD UNIVERSITIES AND COLLEGES ACCOUNTABLE
In response to the Government of Ontario’s announcement of new directives to strengthen accountability at Ontario universities under Bill 166, @HillelOntario , the Centre for Israel and Jewish Affairs (CIJA), the @CanadianFSWC , @UJAFederation , the Network of Engaged Canadian Academics, @AlliedVoicesIL , and @StandWithUsCA released the following joint statement:
“The Ontario government has introduced new requirements to strengthen how colleges and universities respond to hate and discrimination on campus — including minimum requirements for policies and rules, clearer complaint processes including ensuring that regardless where complaints are submitted they are referred through the complaint’s mechanism process, anti-hate training, and new consequences for institutions that fail to comply.
"At Toronto Metropolitan University, Justice Benotto found that existing policies were too often not enforced “consistently and decisively.” These new measures reinforce a simple principle: institutions must not only have rules, they must enforce them.
"We have consistently called for stronger accountability and meaningful consequences when institutions fail to protect students or enforce their own policies.
"As Jewish students face harassment, exclusion and discrimination on campuses across Ontario, including through antizionist behaviour, policies cannot exist only on paper. Institutions must act — and there must be consequences when they fail to do so.
"This is an important step forward by the Ontario government toward ensuring universities are accountable for providing safe and welcoming campuses for all students and staff."

At Toronto Metropolitan University, a recent external review has documented serious concerns about antisemitism, exclusion, intimidation and the erosion of a sense of belonging among members of the Jewish campus community.
In response, B’nai Brith Canada joined @AlliedVoicesIL and @StandWithUsCA in writing to the Hon. Bob Rae, Chair of TMU’s President’s Implementation Task Force on Campus Expression, Antisemitism and Community Safety, urging the Task Force to turn the report’s recommendations into timely, meaningful and measurable action.
We called on TMU to move with urgency, strengthen Jewish life on campus and ensure Jewish students, faculty and staff can participate fully in university life without fear of harassment or marginalization.
This situation is untenable. Jewish students cannot wait. The time to act is now.

I’ve been asked what concrete steps people who oppose the August 24 motion accusing Israel of genocide and apartheid and calling for municipal divestment can take.
Here they are:
1. Contact your city councillor.
Email your borough councillor directly and ask them to vote against the motion. Their email addresses are publicly available.
2. Sign the petition / letter opposing the motion.
It takes a few minutes:
montrealpourtous.ca/ici/
3. Submit a question to City Council.
You do not have to be a Montréal resident to submit a question.
You’ll be asked which elected official you want to address. Some options include:
- Alex Norris, Projet Montréal councillor and one of the proponents of the motion
- Soraya Martinez Ferrada, Mayor of Montréal
- Jim Beis, responsible for public security
- Your own councillor, or another councillor of your choosing
You must use this form to submit your question.
forms.cloud.microsoft/pages/…
4. Show up on August 24.
One thing is very clear at these meetings: people supporting these resolutions show up, organize, ask questions and put pressure on councillors.
If you oppose this motion, do not assume someone else will make that opposition known.
5. Share the information.
Share posts about the motion with your friends, family and community. A lot of people still have no idea this is happening or that they can actually do something about it.
The goal is not just to be angry about the motion after the vote. It is to make opposition visible before councillors vote.
Email. Sign. Submit a question. Show up. Share.

Ambassador @MoedIddo discussed the recent incident at TMU with Ethan Elharrar, who while tabling on campus about Israeli identity was assulted by a carton of expired milk.
When hatred turns into violence, no one is safe. Universities MUST take action.
And it's not just campuses - Antisemitism has become part of Jewish Canadian daily life. Jews are being intimidated on the street and at school, their places of worship are getting shot and vandalized. Jews are feeling unwelcome in their own home.

Just had a one hour conversation with a Palestinian student at York Uni in Toronto who casually told me Jews, gays, and atheists need to be slaughtered.
The craziest part is that he wanted to be filmed. The Islamists in Canada are getting brave.
Video footage coming soon.

As conflict abates abroad, the hate continues to flow at home.
One year later from when we stood together to celebrate @StandWithUsCA fellows @sydgreenspoon & Daniel Brown, our leaders continue to fail to stand up to those sowing hate in 🇨🇦—the very people who robbed Sydney, Daniel, and their peers of the student experience they deserved.
Now more than ever, a week from #RemembranceDay when we honour the sacrifice of those who gave everything in the fight against hate and tyranny, let us reaffirm our solidarity and duty to do the same.
Because our hard-fought freedoms and country are worth fighting for.

Why are fewer Jewish students getting into medical school at the University of Toronto?
For the first time in years, admissions have dropped sharply, and as @YoniFreedhoff says, the reasons remain unclear.

This story demands far more attention. Western University’s leadership is complicit in allowing hate and radicalism to fester on campus. Kudos to @StandWithUsCA for exposing the truth and pursuing justice when the institution itself failed to act.
We EXPOSED the truth
A dossier of leaked group texts from Western University students has revealed that unabashed Jew hatred, including calls to violence, antisemitic tropes, the dehumanization of Jewish students, and the glorification of terror has been running rampant under the banner of a club sanctioned by the University.
This club, like many others, are simply harbouring antisemites and giving them space to empower others with harmful rhetoric that is in direct opposition to our Canadian values. It’s time that our Universities stop allowing this to fester on their campuses.
Western University was presented with all of this information, in gruesome detail. Their response was to not respond at all. This is unacceptable, we demand accountability from our academic institutions and will not rest until our students receive the same support from their schools as any other student.
For two years, students like these have intimidated students and destroyed campuses in Canada under the guise of peaceful protest, and under the cloak of “anti-Zionism”. It’s time for the world to understand what truly fuels this movement, and these screenshots show just that.
We have been working directly with the students involved for months to ensure the appropriate next steps are taken by the University to hold this group accountable. We hope that raising the profile of this issue will help them to do so.
