We got your back, New York!
Readers added context they thought people might want to know
Several figures here aren’t federal results or NY-specific. The $472B combines US wide pledges: Micron's $250B is nationwide (NY site $100B) Anthropic's $50B covers TX and NY. The 48% murder drop is from NY's state run GIVE program (28 departments, Jan – May 2026). arkolith.com/news/news-micr… therepublic.com/?p=843020 governor.ny.gov/news/safer-str…

The British anti-porn laws are now so broad that millions of people will break them without realising. This means that a phone or laptop searched for any reason may end up with people being put on the sex offenders register for possessing ethical and consensual content
Obviously lots of porn being made technically illegal doesn't necessarily mean the cops will be battering down your door at every little offence. But that just means they have broad discretion to selectively enforce it against people they dislike.

especially when you realise this at a very young age but you don't know you're autistic and you just can't comprehend why everyone else your age is allowed to be themselves but you arent
there's something very soul crushing about being autistic and feeling like the entire world knows how to connect and you have been left out .

"we need to ban porn because the industry is exploitative" is the most idiotic shit imaginable. that's good reasoning for *regulating* the industry, not for banning shit outright. if we banned every industry that's exploitative, practically every single job would be gone 🤦‍♀️

This is what the beginning of the surveillance state looks like in America Americans in Connecticut received a bill for additional taxes on their car because cameras spotted it in a different city A private company called Municipal Tax Service (MTS) is hired by cities to drive around and use automatic license plate readers on cars parked in different cities It then makes connections if that car lives in that area and sends the owner a bill for new taxes on that vehicle for being in the city The owner of this vehicle says she doesn’t live in that city, provided proof and says her car was only in a different city because her kid drives there for school MTS didn’t care and said that the proof didn’t matter and they had to pay it. They appealed to the city, the city said they had to deal with MTS But here’s the problem, MTS gets paid 38% commission on tax revenue they recover + $50 per vehicle billed to the owner. They made $9 million in commission in just one year from sending people additional tax bills So this company has no incentive to ever help you and just deny you, which they did Only after the mainstream media got involved would the city drop this one new tax bill which was false to begin with In America we now literally have private companies driving around scamming our license plates to tax us more money This is insanity and it needs to end

Who decides what you get to see online? Who decides what is "harmful?" This is the section the judges will be reviewing to possibly unblock from TX SCOPE Act: a filter strategy to keep minors away from content “that promotes, glorifies, or facilitates” suicide, self-harm, eating disorders, substance abuse, bullying, and more. The law does not define these "harmful materials", which leaves it open to perception...and most concerningly, expansion based on the ideology and agenda of whoever holds power.
Texas is making every social media user prove their age before they can open an account. That means adults too, not just kids. The full Fifth Circuit is now rehearing the case against the SCOPE Act, and the age checks aren’t even up for debate. The only question left is whether Texas also gets to filter what teenagers see. reclaimthenet.org/fifth-circ…

This is awful. Election workers are on the front line of our democracy, and we should be doing all we can to protect them. The last thing they need is the federal government trying to intimidate them & threatening them with criminal prosecution.
Election officials in California described the Trump administration's legal threats as having profound consequences on their mental health and their ability to do their jobs, according to court papers filed on Friday. abcnews.link/XhSPSwC

When parents hand an internet-enabled device to their kids, they do so knowing that the device can access porn from anywhere in the world (yet AV enforcement is mostly limited to the U.S.). It is the parent who supplies the device to the child, not the pornographer. The alcohol analogy would only make sense under the following conditions: if an adult buys a bottle of vodka, brings it home, doesn't lock the liquor cabinet, and their teenager gets drunk, the vodka company is held liable for irresponsible parenting. We are not suing Tito's for every drunk teenager. You are not required to send your ID across the internet to an alcohol manufacturer to buy a bottle of booze. Even in a liquor store, you show it to a clerk. They don't keep a copy. Unlike a hacked website, if the store is later robbed, a criminal won't get your full name and address. And AV laws don't keep kids safe. They give parents a false sense of security. Device-based parental controls exist for a reason. Router controls exist for a reason. Monitoring exists for a reason. Parent your own kids.
Replying to @LondonRiverSFW
No, it's like saying requiring ID to buy alcohol or voting is a slippery slope to having to show ID to do anything. Just because people voted in authoritarian politicians who abuse power doesn't mean blocking access to porn behind an ID age verification check is a bad thing

Part of all this data center stuff is so consumers no longer own their own computers. They want us to rent computer access so we own nothing & are forced to hand over all of our data. They’ll sell/give/lease us portals (screens) that connect to their subscription servers. Evil.
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman says it’s “quite terrible” that people have so much DRAM sitting in their own PCs instead of being used in data centers. “Everyone have a bunch of the world’s limited supply of DRAM sitting in their own computer. And be used 5% of the time,” He argues that cloud data centers should make better use of limited memory supplies instead of people running AI models locally.

Everybody is saying he’s scared of the guillotine. Like no, airlines are literally seeing their bottom line beginning to crumble. Poor ppl don’t buy tickets and we are heading towards a majority poor country with no middle class if nothing changes
United Airlines CEO Scott Kirby tells the New York Times that "wealth inequality has become a danger to our society" and must be addressed. "We should have a national wealth tax... we should have inheritance taxes that get close to 100 percent at some level. I would pay them." (nytimes.com/2026/10/18/busin…)

The fact that Google co-founder Sergey Brin has enough loose change to spend $100 million of it on a campaign to defeat the proposed one-time 5% tax on California billionaires is itself the single most powerful argument in favor of a one-time 5% tax on California billionaires.

If it keeps going at this rate, we might, for (I think) the first time in history, be about to witness the first continent-wide youth revolt in Europe - a "European spring" of sorts. The sheer number of countries where it's **already** happening is pretty overwhelming. I count 8, including 4 with violent clashes: - France, famously - Albania (see below) with daily clashes in Tirana and a government building set alight - Belgium: the French movement spilled over, including riots in Liège - Italy: "No Meloni Day" student protests since 16 October, turning into riots in Milan, Turin and Bologna - Greece: students camping in Athens' Syntagma Square over housing and education costs, explicitly inspired by France - Germany: pupils blockading schools in Berlin and Hamburg in solidarity with France - Spain: an indefinite education strike in Madrid, with students marching alongside teachers and families - Serbia: the student movement born from the 2024 Novi Sad station collapse is now running its own list in the 25 October election And, by the way, the fact it's also happening in countries with close to no immigration - like Albania - goes to show how reductive it is to label these movements, like JD Vance and Trump did with France, as the fruit of "the migrants hav[ing] taken over." As is often the case, it's much more a story of "it's the economy, stupid." As such, Trump with his war on Iran, has ironically done much more to fuel this (pun intended) than any migrant.
BREAKING: Albania right now, anti-government protests have erupted into violence.
