There are cover bands who have quite the following here in LA. Granted, they arenโt playing So-Fi, but their venues fill up frequently. It seems those who do succeed, arenโt just covering songs - theyโre tribute bands who mimic a popular band while playing their most popular track lists.
Damage, Inc and before them MotorbreatH both have decent followings (both LA Metallica Tribute bands).
Eliminator, who has had TV appearances, is a popular ZZ Top band that plays around Hollywood.
As for the play- I can say that I do recognize when I see a cover band do a complicated piece. I canโt shred. If you pull off a great solo, note for note, Iโll notice. I care.
The cover band I saw last night was terrific! Lots of fun. I think they chose somewhat unique songs. They were really good.
However, this may sound harsh, but itโs true. No one cares how hard the next song is to sing. No one. No one.
Literally, no one cares about the band. I think people like having the band and enjoy live music. Some bands certainly are better at entertaining the crowds. The bands that know no one cares how hard that song was.
Donโt tell me how you made the donut. Just let me eat the donut.
