First London City Airport, now Stansted. Heathrow and Gatwick next?
We have climate deniers at the heart of our Government.
The climate change committee has said the industry cannot grow without undermining our emissions goals, and has urged ministers to stop expansion.
NEW: PM at investment summit announces a £1bn deal with Manchester Airport Group to expand Stansted. PM says it open up new routes for work and holiday destinations
Starmer says deal the “first of tens of billions worth of inward investment deals that we will sign today, because we're determined to lead the way on growth”

This low capacity junction is why Silvertown can never in fact be a replacement for what Mayor Khan calls the 'antiquated and out of date' Blackwall tunnel. @BBCTomEdwards @RossLydall

An entire new bus service to help 60 cyclists, maximum, cross the river per hour (when up to 1000/hour use cycle superhighways). No demand analysis, obviously. Just PR, so they can say something has been done.
Three single-decker buses are to be converted to create a fleet of “bike buses” to transport cyclists through London’s new Silvertown tunnel.

But we don’t want more motorways. Or any new roads. We are in a climate crisis. Buses, trams, bike paths etc is what we need

Sunday morning. East wind. No Heathrow planes. London City planes haven't started. Waking up to the sound of rain. How refreshing!

George Monbiot argues that Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) is a great example of a technology that gives the impression of progress, while emissions remain unchecked:
“I’m very much in favour of new environmental technologies. I’m very much against their use as substitutes for effective policy.” 1/3

Wait, tolls were necessary to disincentivise driving to keep #AirPollution down. Now the tolls are being made cheaper, using ULEZ scrappage money??
What else could £12m be spent on….Cheaper public transport? School Streets? Cleaner buses? #Silvertown

What's the point of a consultation on tolls if the Mayor has already decided what will happen before the consultation results are in? As with his decision to build Silvertown, the Mayor is not interested in listening to Londoners - who overwhelmingly told him they didn't want it.
Silvertown and Blackwall tunnel tolls won't be scrapped, says Sadiq Khan standard.co.uk/news/transpor…

The same Peter Hendy who, as London Transport boss, greenlighted the disastrous Garden Bridge, wasting £47m of public money on a design team procured without following procedure, and a construction team prematurely contracted before there was an implementable planning permission

BREAKING: We're outside the Department for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities to demand Angela Rayner revokes the expansion of London City Airport.
This decision goes directly against the government's own Climate Change Committee's advice.
Labour fails on climate

And last year 1 in 4 flights from London City Airport departed half empty.
For Labour to be expanding an airport demonstrates a fundamental lack of seriousness about tackling the climate crisis - once again they're in the pockets of big business.

.@TheGreenParty has been relentless holding @SadiqKhan accountable on his climate failures. His enabling of huge new fossil-fueled infrastructure - Silvertown Tunnel, & @LondonCityAir expansion - show he isn't the climate activist he claims to be. Mainstream media shld take note.
Massive Attack gig was epic.
And great to see @carla_denyer, @domipalmer with @novaramedia.
Particularly stunned though to see Dale Vince challenged on Labours expansion of London City Airport say "Well, we can't have it all."
Dangerous levels of complacency on climate crisis.

London City Airport will not be happy until it has crushed the local community in a bid to feed their gluttonous overseas shareholders.
Residents said NO. Councils said NO. Local MPs said NO. Cllrs said NO. Assembly said No. Mayor said NO. SOS said NO.

In @greenwich_wire this week I read that you support the expansion of London City Airport. As *Cabinet member for Environment* how exactly are you going to improve air quality and reduce noise pollution if this expansion goes ahead? The 2022 Analysis of Net Zero 2030 Targets for London clearly states the need to discourage this 👇. @MayorofLondon @metecoban92 @LDN_environment @StopMSGSphere @StopCityAirport @NewhamGreens @LewishamCouncil

In the midst of a climate crisis, why expand aviation infrastructure in one of the world's metropolitan areas already most well-served by aviation with far above average per-capita emissions?
Such greed!
The issue is not flight shaming. This is a policy decision.

What a shame it's needed. City airport expansion = bread & circuses for the rich.
If they said yes to City, used for short haul (replaceable by train), business travel & private jets, what hope for stopping Heathrow and Gatwick expansion plans?

Buying homes for immediate new council housing is great policy. I’m proud to have pushed for London funding in my last job, and well done @BHGreens and @BrightonHoveCC for being at the forefront of this so far.
Now Govt needs to create a big new national ‘Buy the Supply’ fund.
