🎥 “We want to go the Farage route, not the Lib Dem route.”
Ashok Kumar of Greens for Palestine spoke to Novara Media about strategy behind the Green Party’s “Zionism is racism” motion, which took a year to organize and was designed to expose Labour’s politics. He said PM Andy Burnham’s response revealed him as little different from Keir Starmer.
Inspired by Jean-Luc Mélenchon’s France Unbowed and its “strategy of conflict,” the idea is to set the terms of debate, provoke a backlash, and heighten contradictions to force opponents to reveal positions.
Rather than chase more MPs by moderating its politics, Kumar says the Greens should use confrontation to shift the debate leftward and become an anti-establishment force.
“We want to drag [the paradigm] to the left kicking and screaming.”

The past 20 days have marked one of the most monolithic pushes by British media to vilify the Zionism is Racism Green Party motion.
Imbalanced coverage would be an understatement.
The papers wrote 447 articles on the Greens' Zionism vote. Israel, pro-Israel groups and the Chief Rabbi got 12,133 words. Palestinians got 3,173.
Any institution that parades as a "news outlet" can no longer be taken seriously if it covers this motion without also covering the people, Palestinians, who have endured, suffered and been oppressed the most by the ideology in action.
What the figures show:
• Israel's government alone got 3,904 words. More than every Palestinian put together.
• 2,422 of the 3,173 Palestinian words came in stories tying Lubna Speitan, the Palestinian who proposed the motion, to al-Qaeda.
• Apart from Lubna, two Palestinians were quoted across 436 articles, for 76 words between them. Nobody in Gaza, the occupied West Bank or Lebanon was quoted at all.
• Lubna told the Telegraph that 56 members of her family had been killed in Gaza. One article mentioned it: the Telegraph's own al-Qaeda story, in paragraph 44 of 51.
• Lubna has received death and rape threats since the vote. Al Jazeera reported it. None of the 447 British articles did.
• 43 articles said, in the paper's own voice, that the motion meant the destruction or abolition of Israel. The motion calls for one state with "equal rights for all".
• 36 headlines said antisemitism. Not one of 447 said genocide.
• 304 of the 436 articles we read in full never mentioned the genocide at all.
• 0 of 89 comment pieces backed the motion.
• The Daily Mail ran 38 articles on the motion, and in that time, just 2 on Israel's ongoing attacks across Gaza, the West Bank and Lebanon.

Ed has never threatened the Labour Party with non-cooperation for facilitating and enabling a genocide, arresting pensioners for holding signs, or overseeing new restrictions on the right to peaceful protest... despite being the Party of civil liberties. Why is that?
Seems to me the whole political establishment is telling on itself. A motion is a red line, but genocide isn't.

To be clear: both the Lib Dems and Labour are saying that they will refuse to form a coalition with the Greens, even if it as the expense of a Reform or Tory government, because of a Green Party conference motion condemning a political ideology that’s led to genocide?
Really?

Went on BBC Politics Live to discuss why Zionism is a racist ideology. The anchor and all three panelists looked like they were about to cry at the end. Very weird behaviour.

I do find this really quite abhorrent, in the same way that it was disgraceful when Burnham made the same pronouncement that the ZiR motion was antisemitic in Parliament
There are many very prominent Jewish and Palestinian people who supported the ZiR motion and have spoken in favour of it.
There are very large numbers of British Jews who are anti-Zionist (approx. 38,000, or 12% of all British Jews), a good portion of whom are anti-Zionist because they see Zionism is inextricably and undeniably racist.
It is extraordinary that Coburn thinks it's OK to declare them anti-semitic, and for the BBC to repeatedly fail to point out that anti-Zionism is a protected belief that has been declared to be "worthy of respect in a democratic society"; and that includes when anti-Zionism is predicated on the idea that Israel's foundation was a racist endeavor.
Really, these people live in a weird bubble. Approximately 50% people in Britain think Israel is committing a genocide in Gaza. Only 17% do not.
I'd wager that most ordinary people are looking at this furore and thinking to themselves: hold on, are we really saying the country committing genocide, whose leaders are wanted for war crimes and crimes against humanity, is not racist?
“[Saying] ‘Zionism is racism’ is offensive, it’s antisemitic and it’s dangerous”
Broadcaster Jo Coburn says she “watched in horror” as the Green Party passed its motion on Zionism and criticises leader Zack Polanski's defence in his #BBCLauraK interview

You can be as insulting (and tacky in your search for clicksn and engagement) as you want, but under Polanski the Greens won 587 local council seats five months ago, took over long-time Labour-dominated Councils, and helped catalyse Starmer's resignation two years after he won a landslide election.
That has forced the whole Burnham operation rhetorically left and pushed the government to take (still plainly insufficient) steps to bring in sanctions on Israeli settlements.
Now Burnham is trying to collapse local governments in response to a Green Party motion, which undermines his own rhetoric on devolution and undercuts his commitment to electoral reform and cooperative government.
Burnham is taking the risk of causing serious upheaval, backlash and turmoil in response to a Green Party MOTION. A motion! That's genuinely insane - and illustration of the Green's power and influence, not the obverse.
Seems pretty serious to me.

Nobody — truly nobody — who possess basic thinking faculties thinks it’s “antisemitic” to claim the ideological foundations of a state currently committing the crimes of apartheid and genocide might be racist ideological foundations.

The cynicism of the Labour Party knows no bounds. They'll draw a "red line" at a motion calling Zionism racism but not at genocide.
This is plainly designed to drive a wedge in the Greens. Force some councillors to peel off and create division - effectively using and abusing antisemitism (a profound and important issue) for short- term political goals.
We know it's not about any principled stance about antisemitism because Philipson's clique has shown zero concern for the very many Jewish people, mostly anti-Zionist, who were investigated and effectively harassed by the Labour Party for their views on Israel.
We also know it's rubbish because Labour has encouraged Councils to adopt the IHRA Definition of Antisemitism, which effectively makes expressing anti-Zionist beliefs an antisemitic offence, despite 12% of all British Jews declaring themselves anti-Zionist.
But it is very on-brand for Phillipson, one of the collaborators in the Labour Together project that so irresponsibly, cynically and covertly used the very real and important issue of antisemitism for factional advantage. This is the essence of the McSweeney-ite method that did so much damage to the Labour Party, but also massively inflamed inter-community tensions in the UK.
For ordinary people, the message will be: sorry, you can't effective, progressive and collaborative local government (good housing, clean streets, community centres, functional schools) because we draw a "red line" at calling Israel racist three years into a live-streamed genocide.
The Greens should respond appropriately, calling out the Labour Party for using this issue as a political football, holding local government to ransom because they simply refuse to accept that they lost power five months ago. Call out the Labour Party for sabotaging good governance and coalition politics because they're sore losers - in the name of Zionism.
Proper gutter politics, a crass rerun of Labour under Starmer. Burnham should be better than this; and should know that all this leads to is lots of left-wing people being unable to trust the Labour Party again.
BREAKING: The Labour Party has said that power-sharing agreements with the Green Party will end unless local Greens explicitly reject their party's "Zionism is racism" policy
The Labour Party has asked all Labour groups in power-sharing agreements with the Green Party to review their arrangements in local government after the prime minister's words at PMQs yesterday.
Bridget Phillipson MP, Chair of the Labour Party, said:
“The Prime Minister has been completely clear: this policy is wrong and antisemitic, and has no place in British politics.
“Where local Labour Parties currently have an arrangement with the Greens in local government, we expect their Green counterparts to make clear that they reject this position and to call on their national leadership to reconsider the policy.
“We have asked local Green groups to respond as a matter of urgency. Where they are unable to provide that assurance, Labour will bring any such local arrangement to an end. This isn’t an issue of party politics; it’s about doing what is right and upholding the values anyone holding public office should share.
“The Labour Party fought hard to address antisemitism within our own party and ensure it had no place in our politics. We have a responsibility to uphold those same standards in our relationships with other parties.”

On the motion amendments:
The "Zionist synagogue" amendment was a media operation by liberal Zionists in Greens designed to generate headlines before the vote. Zionism is Racism was an E motion, which has no bearing on disciplinary processes. There was never a prospect of anyone being disciplined for attending a Zionist synagogue. (They got the desired headlines though)
On 'one state' amendment:
How can you support a motion declaring Zionism to be racism, then back an amendment that seeks to preserve the Jewish supremacist state through which that racism is institutionalised?
Zionism is racism, but becomes acceptable within the 67 borders?
When apartheid ended in South Africa, the white supremacist regime was dismantled. That is what needs to happen in Palestine
The two-state proposal is the equivalent of proposing to "end" South African apartheid by preserving white rule in Pretoria while turning the Black Bantustans into a nominally independent state. Would you have supported that?
The Zionist state is a racist endeavour. Its "Law of Return" allows Jews from anywhere in the world to immigrate and obtain citizenship, while Palestinians expelled from their homeland and their descendants are denied the right to return - warehoused in concentration camps and forced to live under military rule
Meanwhile, the Palestinian population within 67 borders—20% of the entity's citizens—must remain a permanent minority if the state is to retain its Jewish supremacist character. Zionists call these Palestinians a "demographic threat" because they might outbreed Jews
You cannot dismantle a system of racial supremacy while preserving the structures that sustain it. One democratic state throughout historic Palestine, with equal rights for all. And accountability for every single person who participated in the genocide, dispossession and countless other violations of international law committed against Palestinians since the Zionist entity was established (and before)
That is what decolonisation means. Not partitioning apartheid, but ending it

It's not a difficult question to answer @bbcnickrobinson so let's look at what you are asking:
First, you need to understand that the question of whether Israel has a right to exist is already answered in international law: No, Israel does not have such a right and no right is codified anywhere in international law for any state, country or political entity.
Second, the demand for Palestinians to recognise Israel's 'right to exist' is a political mechanism meant to force Palestinians to retrospectively legitimise the Zionist movement, the displacement and ethnic cleansing of the 1948 Arab majority in the Nakba, and the termination of the Palestinian right of return.
Third, it is also a question meant to formally recognise Israel as an exclusively Jewish state which codifies unequal status for non-Jewish citizens—such as Palestinian citizens of Israel—by framing the country around a singular ethnic-religious identity rather than a state of all its citizens.
Fourth, this rhetorical focus on Israel's "right to exist" has historically been used to deflect international attention from ongoing territorial expansion, settlements, violence and murder of Palestinians, and the lack of an independent Palestinian state.
Lastly, by asking politicians this question you are engaging in pro-Israel advocacy - either knowingly or unknowingly - and as such you should take a moment to reflect.
I am glad @ZackPolanski didn't answer you but for sure he should have responded emphatically with a 'No, Israel does not have a right to exist.'
Also I am disgusted at your instrumentalisation of the Holocaust, the pogroms, and antisemitism in order to attempt to justify Israel's existence at the expense of the Palestinians.

Mind-boggling - just mind-boggling
Now expected to peak at an extraordinary 4.2C in December
Burnham's speech, stripped of the delivery:
- The big items, a National Care Service, pension reform, electoral reform, all arrive after the next election. Vote first, delivery later.
- Every headline survives 30 seconds. None survive the small print. "Taking control of water" is a power to take control later, if a company fails. The care service "protects people's homes and their savings", except his aides say it won't cover care home costs.
- Palestine got one line. The climate crisis got four words, attached to a North Sea line. AI got a G20 summit and not a word on jobs.
Same product, new packaging.

Replying to @andyburnham
There’s a lot of hype around @andyburnham’s inaugural Labour conference speech.
But look past the speech and ask a much simpler question: What actually changes now?
- Free personal care? After the next election.
- Pension reform? 2030.
- Electoral reform? A commission, potentially for the next manifesto.
- European-level energy prices? A 10-year ambition.
- Water? Some enabling reforms, not public ownership.
Meanwhile, on the issues where government already has the power to act:
- Palestine Action remains proscribed.
- There’s still no full arms embargo on Israel.
- The government is still talking tough on small boats while failing to seriously confront the far-right rhetoric and misinformation poisoning the debate.
- And controversial decisions over further North Sea drilling have been kicked down the road.
There are some genuine measures in the speech, and that's great, but we’ve become far too easily impressed by politicians announcing hope for the future.
If he's in power now, why are so many of the big changes always somewhere down the road?

Ed Miliband served in Starmer's cabinet for 450 days while the UK military was flying daily reconnaissance missions over Gaza for the genocidal Israeli military
He could have resigned at any time. It would have had a huge impact. Like Wes Streeting, he chose to abide by collective cabinet responsibility and serve in a government that was participating in genocide
His action against Israel now only deals with West Bank - and completely ignores UK role in the Gaza genocide
Do no venerate any of these people. They chose their careers over trying to stop the genocide. They should be investigated by ICC
