You can question yourself without quitting on yourself. You don’t have to make the doubt disappear. You have to compete through it. Doubt may show up. Make sure you do, too.

They tell me people don’t play in the post anymore🤷🏼‍♂️ They tell me no one teaches it anymore🤷🏼‍♂️ Having coached 2 post POY, I can promise you I teach it💯 “multiple times the coaches told the other bigs to watch how he does it” Put the right kid in the right environment and enjoy their growth as a player📈 I say it all the time…make sure wherever you train that you’re getting results. Busy work, doesn’t mean quality work🤔

I’ve lived this as both an AAU coach and a dad. Both my girls have played on first teams and “second teams.” For our family, the label mattered less than the fit. Did the style of play suit her? Would she have a role she could earn and grow in? Were the coaches teaching the game… defense too? Was she still excited to come to the gym? One of my favorite coaching seasons started 1-7 and finished 7-0 with a championship. The players shared the ball, played team defense, embraced their roles, and followed each other. We’ve also lost by 20 and had an absolute blast because the girls competed, communicated, and stayed connected. The scoreboard and the label don’t tell the whole story. Do your homework. Ask about player development, recruiting relationships, realistic college pathways, and the plan for your daughter. Then watch a practice and a game. What happens between games often matters more than the games themselves. Is she learning? Does her coach know her? Can she contribute in the team’s style of play? Does she feel challenged… and still love being there? AAU doesn’t have to lead to college basketball to be worth it. The love of the game doesn’t care what division you’re headed to.
Dear AAU Parents, Please take a little advice from a parent who has been around AAU basketball as a Coach & parent for 20+ years. Stop chasing imaginary rankings from paid services like PGH and cool social media posts from programs that over hype players on socials because that is all they can offer. Don't get caught up with trainers who are only worried about your children when they are in their gym. Ask real questions of program directors about approach on player development, college relationships and track record of getting players to college programs. Ask directors about recruiting plans for their players. Pay attention to programs that retain players and are not out recruiting over entire rosters year over year. Track record & trust between families & programs matters; especially in a rapidly changing recruiting landscape, you better be with a program that is committed to all their players and not just a few high profile girls. The top of EVERY circuit has really good players/teams but the bottom of EVERY circuit has bad teams too. Being on an EYBL or 3SSB team, and playing 6-8 mpg can really hurt your recruitment. Not every program is a fit for every player/family but PLEASE do your homework!! Have honest discussions about potential level of play in college and where your child might fit. Be very weary of anyone who only talks about D1. Winning games in AAU is nice and hopefully your daughter is competitive and wants to win but it ultimately doesn't mean anything and not many college coaches are paying attention to the score unless one team is getting smoked. In fact, a coach might pay more attention to how your daughter is acting as a player when they are losing vs how they are playing in a 25pt win. Good luck to all as the girls get prepared for the High School season. @nj_panthers @CoachJordanNJP @unitedNJaau @ShoreshotsGirls @newjerseyrise @ESBC_BlueFlames @NJLadiesHoops @TinyGreenNBS @coachschoiceusa

Getting pulled is a coaching decision. Staying ready is yours. A week after being benched in Oregon’s loss to UCLA, Dylan Raiola returned on the same field Saturday night with the Ducks down 14–6. He threw the winning touchdown with 28 seconds left to beat his former team, Nebraska, 17–14. You can be disappointed in your last chance and still be devoted to your next one.

Phil Jackson says he told Michael Jordan he needed to score less if he wanted to win a championship because scoring titles and championships don’t go together “When I was given the job as the head coach of the Chicago Bulls, I brought Michael Jordan in to speak with me, and I said, ‘You know, you’ve averaged 37, 38, 36 points a game the last three years. You know, you’ve been the scoring champion, but if you look back at the history of the NBA, there hasn’t been a scoring champion for almost 15 years who’s won the championship. They don’t go together.’” “‘And we need to take the focus off you, which is what teams now tilt their whole defense towards, stopping Michael Jordan, and open it up for the rest of our team. And it means you taking less shots a game. That’s important.’ And he stopped me and he said, ‘Are you going to run an equal-opportunity offense like Tex Winter’s been talking about?’” “I said, ‘Yeah, I guess you could call it an equal-opportunity offense, but I’m not going to be calling the plays from the sideline. You guys are going to be reading it on the floor. So if the 24-second clock is running down and it becomes red, which is the call everybody makes when it’s under five seconds, we’ll teach the team how to get the ball to you at the end of that clock because then you can score.’” “He said, ‘Well, I don’t think that I have to give up a scoring championship. I could score 32 points a game and still win a scoring championship. That’s only eight points a quarter.’ I said, ‘Michael, I had trouble scoring eight points a game when I was a player.’” “‘But rather than scoring eight points a quarter, why don’t you save that for the fourth quarter and score 14 points in the fourth quarter and take us home? And you can do what you want to do during the early part of the game and then put the onus and the nail in the coffin in the fourth quarter to seal the deal.’ He kind of liked that idea.” “And, you know, I think we lost two or three of our first games that we played in my first year coaching, and everybody had to kind of figure out how to do it, how to play together when the ball was dictating the action, when the passes were dictating what people would do, rather than a specific number for a player being called from the sideline. And I gave the team a little bit of authority, which is exactly what a coach wants to happen.”

These Total #ATTACK Trainees happened to all cross paths this week at their trainings🏀 Thinking you’re looking at 30 wins minimum (2 teams), maybe 40, and a shot at a combined 1K points🔥 2028’s @ashtyn2212 and @brookecerto (Lincoln Park HS) and 2028 Vivienne and 2029 Jules Goshen (OLSH) are ready for BIG years😤 College coaches take note✍️ #ATTACK #GetBuckets #StrickHoopsFam

College coaches, @DrewH_01 is a 2028 that you’ll want to get on your list✍️ His game continues to grow by leaps and bounds📈 #ATTACK #GetBuckets #StrickHoopsFam
This is a 3-point shooting drill I call “Drift, Lift, and Fill”. I like players to slide to windows so they are always shot ready. So they’ll drift to corner, lift from corner, and fill to the top in this drill. Make it your own. Pick the spots in your offense. I do 5 makes at each (30 total) because it fits our 1 hour training sessions. But again, make it your own and do the amount of makes you want. 2028 @DrewH_01 is doing the drill here. He’s in his 2nd year of Total #ATTACK training with us, and will be a 1st time varsity starter. In his fall league game this week he went 5-7 from 3, including the game winning 3 on a play his coach drew up for him🔥 That’s training translating to games🎯 #ATTACK

I struggled with confidence A LOT in college. I thought I needed my coaches to build it for me. Eventually, I realized confidence was my responsibility. Put in the work. Prepare. Practice positive self-talk. Then TRUST what you’ve built. 🌟
