Self-regulation doesn't always have to happen alone. In fact, I think that regulation can be a great way to build community and tangibly support people that you care about. So, let's dive into doing that and talk about co-regulation [🧵]

So much of the autistic experience, for non autistics, is what they see in terms of behaviour. So much of the actual autistic experience for autistics is the internal maelstrom of painful emotions/overwhelm. Most non autistics do not understand our internal experience.

Executive dysfunction is core to ADHD and often involved in autism, depression, bipolar, and OCD. It's a big barrier with widely ranging impacts from struggles getting started to being unable to stop, from memory to indecision. But, what even is executive dysfunction? 🧵

Just to clarify, for anyone in doubt: this means, the more noticeable our stimming, & the less usual/typical we seem to be while doing it, the more important it likely is for our holistic health/well-being that we are doing it at all. #ActuallyAutistic #AuDHD #ADHD
Self-regulation is an incredibly important process that moves us from being outside of our emotional or sensory norms to something closer to our normal. The bigger that dysregulation or distress we're dealing with is, often the more intense the tools to self-regulate need to be

I like to think of self-regulation as 'staying between the lines' or 'keeping the car on the road.' Whether we're regulating focus, emotion, stimulation, etc. etc., the goal is to have an amount such that it doesn't negatively affect other important aspects of our lives (1/3)

A lot of us in the Black community are walking around with undiagnosed ADHD and Autism because the DSM was not created or researched on folks from our backgrounds. So we often fly under the radar. Then, as adults when we realize we might have these- the assessments cost thousands

I haven't a clue so boosting this question: If you were medicated for ADHD before getting COVID, and then you noticed that your ADHD meds were suddenly less effective post-COVID... Which meds were you taking?

Feeling your feelings isn't one skill, it's several skills in a trench coat. ...and these skills can be particularly difficult for autistic and/or ADHD folks. Let's talk about it. A thread. (1/🧵)

Please remember that people with disabilities in Ontario are trying to survive on pennies. None of our costs are "covered" and many medications are not covered. We can't live on $4 hr. Nobody can. This is why MAiD isn't a choice. My health has gotten much worse living in poverty.

Reframing "silently beating myself up" to "negotiating with a toddler" has saved me so many times (tho it's not always easy to remember to not shame myself for even having to do this in the first place)
Way too often getting myself to successfully start a task is like negotiating with a toddler to eat their vegetables. Me: We need to do our emails. My brain: *tantrum* No. It's too much Me: What about one email? My brain: Nonononono. *throws something* (1/2)

Totally agree. Have heard many stories of ADHDers being turned down for treatment and/or diagnosis just because their career/work life was okay. Meanwhile, they knew the rest of their life was in shambles, but apparently that doesn't count to some people?
I don't like the way treatment for ADHD is so frequently centred around it's impact on work. ADHD impacts every aspect of our lives, and our supports should support all aspects of our lives, including social, physical/mental, community, and work/school

And also, stimulants are good and the stigma against them is bad. They’re good meds! They work well! We have a TON of data on them and their safety/side effect profiles

Genuine question for my #YIMBY friends: What is the plan to make sure this new housing is accessible to people with disabilities? I say this as a guy who likes the idea of more housing

cw: MAiD I realize this is a strong position and likely leaves me on an island. I do wonder if there are other MDs with similar views who have been too shy to speak up. I believe MAiD in Canada is out of control and a moratorium is needed until it can be completely overhauled

Proposed return to pre-pandemic guidelines — where you have to see your doctor in person at least once before you can get a prescription for a controlled substance. …my doctor is in another state. Let’s speak up about the serious barriers to treatment this creates.
BREAKING: The Biden administration has moved to require patients see a doctor in person before getting attention deficit disorder medication or addictive painkillers, toughening access to the drugs against the backdrop of a deepening opioid crisis. apnews.com/article/prescript…

I know this is a complex issue and I am not an ethicist …but I am mortified that we would approve MAiD for mental illness in Canada before we would approve comprehensive publicly-funded access to mental healthcare.

A lot of ADHD'ers struggle with impulsivity. It makes us 'spontaneous' and 'free-spirited,' but it also has real and devastating impacts on our relationships, health, and self-esteem. Let's talk about it and what helps. A thread 🧵(sponsored by @tiimoapp)

BLACK NEURODIVERGENT CONTENT CREATORS ONLY: Because we are supposedly harder to find (I don’t think we are, I think people don’t look and rely on people like me to inform them so they don’t have to know) I want to have some kind of resource to have us listed.
