🗞️Column on the Tories
If a week is a long time in politics then the past year has been a whole era for Kemi Badenoch.
The jury is out on whether this was an Ice Age that saw the Tories locked in the electoral deep freeze, or a Golden Age where an empress vanquished her rivals and flourished.
Badenoch arrived in Birmingham arguably the most sure-footed of any Conservative leader in modern times.
But the last thing she needs right now is an election.

New guidance tells probation officers AI may be used to support “licence condition-related decision-making” - wording broad enough to cover how offenders are managed after release.
The MoJ says humans will always make the final call and insists the tech is mainly for things like summaries and note-taking.
But with thousands of prisoners set to be freed early, Shadow Justice Secretary Nick Timothy warns decisions over dangerous offenders “cannot just be automated”.

The former Foreign Secretary has been widely tipped for a political comeback once Mr Burnham enters Downing Street.
But a well-placed source told The Sun he has instead been lobbying hard behind the scenes for Britain’s top diplomatic posting in the US.

Excl: Asylum seekers will no longer be able to rely on the war in Gaza alone to support claims that the conflict itself puts them at risk under new Home Office guidance.
Officials say applicants must now show “specific reasons” why they would face serious harm.
Home Office spokesperson said: “Following a thorough assessment, it has been determined the scale and intensity of violence in Gaza has decreased significantly since the 10 October 2025 ceasefire and this should be factored into immigration claims.
“We continue to assess all the evidence provided by claimants. Individuals from Gaza may still qualify for refugee status or humanitarian protection based on their circumstances.”

The race to replace Sir Keir Starmer looks done and dusted before it has even really begun.
Barring a major upset, Andy Burnham will have his feet under the Downing Street desk in less than a month.
With any luck he’ll get to be the Prime Minister who watches England bring it home in a World Cup final.
But that is where any crumb of a honeymoon will likely end.
For he will inherit a deeply divided Labour party and an equally fractured country crying out for change.
The endless platitudes will quickly make contact with the intray from hell.
So, what's the plan?
