32 years ago today, No TV and no beer made Homer Simpson something something.
#TheSimpsons episode “Treehouse of Horror V” premiered October 30, 1994.
I’m gonna settle this once and for all with my new two continent model.
Continent 1 is Afro-Eurasia. Continent 2 is All The Other Stuff.
The end. I solved it

I just want nonamericans to understand that this isn’t actually meant to be food. I mean, yes, you eat it, but the purpose of gross nonsense like this is purely and exclusively making a display of excess for shock value

The thing with Chotiner is that he’s not even a particularly tough journalist. He’s just the only one willing to argue with the person he’s interviewing and point out contradictions

A big problem with immigration discourse is that everyone imagines a more coherent and sensical system than the one that exists. “I want people to come the right way and not cut the line.” There is no line.
the word queer was reclaimed because the meaning changed from derogatory to explanatory. you guys are still using the r word as a substitute for stupid, thats not reclaiming

This is all well and good to say until you actually watch the movies and it's a bunch of actors awkwardly standing in front of a green screen giving deliveries like they've never spoken the English language before

i think it bothers me that some fic writers seem to peddle the "it's just a hobby! we're not taking it seriously!" thing as if it's a universal truth. i take it seriously. i want to be good at my hobby. and it's fine if you don't, but i do
Every election the left is presented with the world's easiest trolley problem, and every time they smirk and go "the trolley shouldn't exist" and then walk away.

People never believe me when I point this out but compared to the 19th century it's remarkable how quickly people learn English
Replying to @nycconservat
Spanish speakers are shedding Spanish & learning English faster than the largest non-English speaking European immigrant group. Dramatically.

Some centrist pundits will be like “perhaps we should grind some trans people into paste, to win independents in OH-09” which prompts some trans pundits on social media to be like “every Democrat alive wants to murder me, they are all Hitler,”
Meanwhile blue states have made approximately ~zero concessions on trans issues (even when unpopular with their own voters!) and writ large trans people are extremely reliable Democratic voters and donors. The whole thing is extremely detached from reality.

A generation of young men helped destroy democracy and instead of admitting fault and helping to put it back together, they're like "fuck it, not our problem." A generation of self-absorbed nihilistic pieces of shit.

The single calendar month in which Gen Z was pro Republican for the only time in their entire lives coinciding with November 2024 had me believing in the existence of the devil with the fervor of an evangelical speaking in tongues
It is not the IRS’s job to litigate private disputes about promised payments, it’s their job to collect taxes.
If someone promises to pay your taxes for you and doesn’t, that is between you and them. They are still YOUR TAXES though, your responsibility to make sure they’re paid
Richard Hatch won $1,000,000 on the first season of Survivor. The IRS says he now owes $3.3 million on it.
51 million people watched him win in August 2000. He never paid the tax on the prize.
His defense: he says he caught producers sneaking food to other players, and the show promised to cover his taxes if he won. CBS never commented. The appeals court said he never showed any proof of a deal.
In 2006 a jury convicted him. He served 51 months in federal prison. In 2011 he went back for nine more, for not fixing his returns.
Then the bill kept growing.
This March, 26 years after the finale, a federal judge let the IRS collect about $3.3 million with interest. The government put liens on two of his homes in Newport. He is appealing on his own, without a lawyer.
In the video below he explains why he thinks the tax was never his to pay.
"The taxes on the million were required by law… to have been paid to Malaysia before we left the island… by CBS or Mark Burnett."
The case for Hatch: if the show made that promise, he was set up. The case for the IRS: a $1 million check is income. Everyone else pays theirs.
Was the first Survivor winner played by the show, or did he try to outwit the wrong player?
