On this date in 1990 Blues Guitarist, Vocalist, Songwriter, and Band Leader Stephen Ray Vaughan died in a tragic helicopter crash on the way to Chicago from a concert in Alpine Valley, East Troy, Wisconsin. The accident, which killed all 5 people on board, which was attributed to pilot error (controlled flight into terrain), as the helicopter flew into a ski hill in dense fog shortly after takeoff due to pilot disorientation. The other 4 victims were Jeff Brown (pilot), Bobby Brooks (Eric Clapton's agent), Nigel Browne (bodyguard), and Colin Smythe (tour manager).
Vaughan was best known as the guitarist and frontman of the blues rock trio Stevie Ray Vaughan and Double Trouble. Although his mainstream career spanned only 7 years, he is considered one of the most influential musicians in the history of blues music, and one of the greatest guitarists of all time. He was the younger brother of guitarist Jimmie Vaughan.
