What's the one subject you were scared to teach?

Edison: a few months of school. Lincoln: about eighteen months. Franklin: two years. Abigail Adams: schools mostly took boys, so she read her way through her father's library. A mind gets built in more places than a classroom.

We pulled our four kids out of school 7 years ago. Like you, we sat through 13 years of it ourselves. We weren't angry, we just finally looked at it. Here's what we saw. 🧵

Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, around 1938: teacher Martha Royer with two first graders in her one-room school. Fourteen pupils, first grade through second year of high school, all in one room. Could one teacher do that today? (Library of Congress)

Three faces on our money: Washington: little formal schooling, never went to college. Lincoln: less than a year of school, by his own count. Franklin: out of school and working at 10. A parent, a book, and time did a lot of the work.

Seven years in the minors, with a 7-Eleven shift in between. Tell this one to any kid who thinks they're behind.

San Augustine, Texas, April 1943. Rural school children coming into class as the teacher rings the bell. What do you think this school day got right?

50 states in 60 days with kids who never had to ask a school for permission to be gone is the real flex here. That's the actual case for having more - not just more love in the house, more room to go live your life together.

“We got our kid a smartphone because we were worried he wouldn’t fit in with his peers.” Which peers? The ones who can’t get through two sentences without reaching for a screen? The ones watching violent videos for thousands of hours? The eleven-year-olds addicted to porn? The ones getting advice about chest binders and puberty blockers from strangers on TikTok? What, exactly, are you afraid they’re missing out on?

This has always been my argument. Only in public school are kids segregated by age only. (Even private schools are more flexible.) Life is not lived only by the age of your friend group.

Best five minute data lesson for any age: cover the headline, read the axis first, then ask what the bars really show. A kid who learns that is hard to fool with a chart.

Always cool getting a like from an influencer you admire. It’s like getting an autograph from an athlete you grew up watching or someone you look up to.

You called every adult on the street Mr. or Mrs. Lastname, full stop, even the ones you knew well. First names for grown-ups would have gotten you a look that ended the conversation.

Notice what's missing from that list - no sight words, no letter sounds, no reading level. 1954 kindergarten was measuring whether a kid was ready for a classroom, not whether they'd already started the curriculum.

I don’t think knowing where your 12 year old is automatically makes you a helicopter parent. They can talk to their teachers, make plans with friends and handle disagreements themselves while you still know where they are. I’d be more concerned about doing everything for my child than knowing she made it somewhere.

The fixed-start-time piece is the part a building structurally can't budge on - if the clock is running 45-90 minutes late, an 8am bell isn't an inconvenience, it's fighting biology every single day. A kid whose day starts when they're actually awake gets a very different test of whether it's ADHD or just a mismatched clock.

Books, planning, and hands-on options in one place sounds like a thoughtful way to give homeschool families more room to find what fits their kids.
