🚨 Amhara IDPs displaced for a second time after deadly @AbiyAhmedAli regime drone strikes on Jari IDP camp killed at least 23 civilians and injured over 40 others
Amhara internally displaced persons (IDPs) who survived the October 29th, 2026, drone strikes on the Turk Camp, administered under the Jari IDP Camp near Hayk Town in Tehuledere Woreda, South Wollo Zone, Amhara Region, have been forced to flee their shelters once again. The strikes killed at least 23 civilians and severely injured more than 40 others, according to eyewitness accounts. Survivors have since abandoned the camp and scattered across surrounding streets and areas, fearing additional attacks by government drones or fighter jets.
The displaced civilians had originally fled massacres and identity-based attacks targeting Amhara communities in Oromia Region, losing their homes, livelihoods and belongings before seeking refuge in Amhara Region. Many had already endured severe humanitarian hardship before the latest drone strikes targeted the camp where they had sought safety. Now facing displacement for a second time, survivors remain exposed to further violence and worsening humanitarian conditions, with their access to safe shelter and essential assistance uncertain.

I personally support the Coalition of Ethiopian Peoples' Forces for Survival. I understand why people have reservations - I wasn’t born yesterday. However, I view the Prosperity Party as exponentially more dangerous than any alternative right now (accelerating the country toward genocide, ethnocide, and ethnic cleansing). If you genuinely see the Prosperity Party as a mass-democidal and genocidal regime, consider supporting this coalition, or at the very least, refrain from working against it - give it a probationary period to prove itself, take into full account the severe challenges it is up against, and then make an honest assessment.

🚨 Alliance for Survival Chairman Fano Zemene Kassie announces six-point medium-term plan aimed at removing the @AbiyAhmedAli regime, ending Ethiopia's recurring wars, and safeguarding the survival of Ethiopia's peoples
Fano Zemene Kassie, Chairman of the Ethiopian People’s Forces Alliance for Survival (AFS), read the alliance’s latest statement on October 31st, 2026, in the presence of Council members, including TPLF Chairman Debretsion Gebremichael, following the conclusion of its sixth regular Council meeting held from October 30th–31st.
During the meeting, the first since the alliance’s establishment was publicly announced, the Council assessed Ethiopia’s political and military situation, regional developments and international relations before approving a six-point medium-term strategic plan aimed at removing the Abiy regime from power and establishing an inclusive political transition.
The statement emphasized that AFS is not merely a temporary military alliance formed to overthrow the Prosperity Party government, but a long-term strategic coalition seeking to end Ethiopia’s recurring wars, safeguard the survival of its peoples and establish a democratic political system.
The Council accused the Abiy regime of fueling wars and intercommunal violence across Tigray, Amhara, Oromia, Somali, Afar, Sidama, Gambella and other regions. It also warned that Ethiopia’s domestic wars risk expanding into a wider regional war through military confrontations and provocations involving neighboring countries.
The six-point strategic plan includes:
1. Strengthening the alliance’s multifaceted struggle against the Abiy regime.
2. Coordinating popular resistance and diplomatic activities inside Ethiopia and across diaspora communities.
3. Strengthening the military and organizational capabilities of AFS member organizations and coordinating operations against regime forces.
4. Expanding cooperation with political parties, civic organizations, intellectuals, diplomats and influential public figures.
5. Strengthening relations and cooperation with the peoples and governments of the Horn of Africa.
6. Expanding diplomatic engagement and media operations.
Fano Zemene Kassie also conveyed the Council’s call for AFS member organizations to strengthen military coordination and unity, while emphasizing that Ethiopia’s future political transition must include the active participation of political parties, civic institutions and the broader population.
Addressing the international community, the Council declared:
“We call upon the entire international community to properly recognize the destructive role being played by the authoritarian, genocidal Prosperity Party regime as an instigator of war and conflict in the region and as a threat to the survival, peace and security of both Ethiopia’s peoples and neighboring countries.”
The statement concluded by urging the international community to cooperate with AFS in protecting human and democratic rights and promoting lasting peace and stability throughout the Horn of Africa.
⚡️ AFNM Chairman Arbegna Zemene Kassie announced the formation of a new alliance called the Ethiopian Peoples’ Forces Alliance for Survival (Alliance for Survival), bringing together seven armed groups with the stated objective of removing the Prosperity Party regime.
🔵 The Amhara Fano National Movement (AFNM), Oromo Liberation Army (OLF–OLA), Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF), Ogaden National Liberation Front (ONLF), Afar Revolutionary Democratic Unity Front (Ugugumo), Benishangul Peoples’ Liberation Movement and Gumuz Peoples’ Democratic Movement announced the formation of a new joint alliance called the Ethiopian Peoples’ Forces Alliance for Survival (Alliance for Survival).
🔵 In a statement issued on September 20, the seven groups said they had agreed to coordinate their political and organizational efforts with the stated objective of removing the Prosperity Party regime and establishing an inclusive transitional government governed by a transitional charter.
🔵 The alliance said a post-Prosperity transition would seek to end the country’s wars, guarantee human and democratic rights, address the economic and social crisis, improve relations with neighboring countries, and restore Ethiopia’s regional and international standing.
🔵 The groups also committed to resolving their differences peacefully through an inclusive national and constitutional dialogue and the “freely expressed will” of Ethiopia’s peoples.
🔵 The alliance called on other Ethiopian political and civic organizations to join its efforts, urged members of the regime’s armed forces to join the alliance’s struggle, and appealed to neighboring countries, African states and the international community to support what it described as a transition toward justice and democracy.

🚏 AND THREE DAYS LATER, A BUS STATION
The same UN statement carries a second strike, and it is the one that matters most for what this thread argues.
📄 OHCHR, ON 9 NOVEMBER 2023
"Another drone attack hit a bus station in Waber town on 9 November, killing 13 people who were waiting to board a bus."
Thirteen civilians. Standing at a vehicle. Waiting to get on it.
🔍 NOW PUT IT BESIDE POSTS 12 AND 13
Finarwa, 20 October 2026 — a crowd loading goats onto a lorry. Four dead, two of them children.
Rama, 30 October 2026 — a crowd picking grain up off the road. Eleven to twelve dead.
Waber, 9 November 2023 — a crowd waiting to board a bus. Thirteen dead.
Three years apart, in two regions, and the same shape on the ground every time. A vehicle, with civilians gathered at it.
⚠️ AND THE SAME CAVEAT, FROM THE SAME DOCUMENT
The statement records that Fano militias were reportedly active in the area when the strike occurred.
That is the third time in this thread that a crowd was struck where fighters were said to be nearby. It is the defence that will be offered every time, and post 27 is why it does not hold.
⚖️ AND WHAT THE 2023 DATE DOES TO POST 13
It means that pattern is not a finding about one month in 2026. The same reading, of the same shape, was killing civilians three years earlier — and a UN statement said so at the time.
‖ Goats, grain, and a bus.
‖ The reading is the authorisation, and it did not start this year.

How can anyone laugh and mock the deaths of innocent civilians and children in drone strikes? Human lives should never be viewed through political affiliations. The suffering of innocent people is never something to joke about. Have some humanity and respect for human life! 😡
One thing I really am struggling to understand is how is it the women who r laughing & mocking on drone strikes of innocent civilians & kids?! The young man @ephzeus condemned Z attack while @Bezyee & @AbyssinianLeelt were busy sending over laughing emojis. What a disgrace😡

🏕 WHAT THE LAW SAYS ABOUT A CAMP
There is a famous provision that forbids attacking displacement sites. Almost everybody cites it at the wrong party, mine included.
⚠️ THE TRAP
The Kampala Convention — the AU's treaty on displaced people — article 7(5)(i) prohibits "violating the civilian and humanitarian character of the places where internally displaced persons are sheltered."
The perfect sentence for this thread. And it does not bind the government.
Article 7(5) opens: "Members of armed groups shall be prohibited from." It addresses non-state armed groups.
Cite it against the Ethiopian state and you hand them a one-line correction they will use to discard everything else you wrote.
✅ THE ARTICLE THAT DOES BIND THE STATE
Ethiopia deposited its Kampala ratification on 3 August 2021.
Article 9(1) binds states to protect displaced people "regardless of the cause of displacement" against, at 9(1)(b), "war crimes and other violations of international humanitarian law."
⚖️ UNDER THE LAWS OF WAR
Displaced people have no special status. They are civilians, and a camp is a civilian object, presumed civilian in case of doubt. I am not claiming it is protected like a hospital. I do not need it to be.
⚠️ THE OBJECTION FROM POST 3
DW's residents thought the strike may have been aimed at Fano on the periphery. Take it at its strongest: assume fighters were near.
Four to five strikes, fifteen to twenty minutes apart, on tarpaulin shelters holding more than 1,700 displaced people, does not become lawful because armed men were in the area. Distinction and proportionality do not relax because fighters are near.
A target nearby is a reason for more care, not a defence.
‖ Four to five strikes on a displacement site, with no fighting there
‖ at the time on all three of Reuters' sources.
‖ That is an apparent violation of the plainest rule there is.

◈ HOW THEY GOT HERE
A cargo plane, a Turkish airstrip, and a trail of flight records. This part was done by hobbyists and it has held for five years.
✈️ THE AIRCRAFT THAT CARRIED THEM
An open-source tracker writing as Gerjon, 28 October 2021: an Ethiopian Airlines Boeing 777 freighter, registration ET-AVQ, flew from Tekirdag Corlu airport in Turkey to Harar Meda on 20 and 21 August 2021. Then again on 25 August, and again on 24 September.
Three loading dollies of wooden crates, and two more of black boxes.
🔍 HIS OWN HEDGE, WHICH I AM KEEPING
"it remains to be seen whether these boxes can be linked to Bayraktar TB2 UAVs, other military equipment, or other types of cargo."
That is what honest open-source work sounds like, and I have left it as he wrote it.
📄 THE CORROBORATION
ProPublica, July 2022, from flight records: a charter left Tekirdag two days after Abiy met Erdogan, from "an airstrip known for testing and exporting the Turkish drones" — the first of at least three runs in about a month. That is the same 20 August departure, reached by a second route. Neither government answered questions about the flights.
🇦🇪 THE PART NOBODY PROSECUTES
The European Council on Foreign Relations, February 2025: Emirati distributors largely facilitated the deliveries. One tracker logged 51 suspicious cargo flights in September and October 2021 — 45 of them from the UAE — reaching 90 UAE flights by November.
US diplomatic sources told the New York Times they saw drones flown by Emirati pilots conducting strikes in November 2020 — nine months before the airlift above, and not Ethiopian-flown.
Turkish defence exports to Ethiopia reached about sixty million dollars by the end of 2021, from near zero the year before.
‖ A military framework agreement was signed in Ankara on 18 August 2021.
‖ The first freighter left Corlu two days later.

❖ WHAT IS ACTUALLY UP THERE
Four aircraft types, three supplier countries, and three of the four established from satellite photographs.
🇹🇷 BAYRAKTAR TB2 · TURKEY
Confirmed by Wim Zwijnenburg of PAX, the Dutch peace organisation, using Planet SkySat imagery of 9 December 2021:
"Now new Planet Skysat high-resolution imagery confirms the presence of the TB-2 at the Harar Meda military airport."
Harar Meda, at Bishoftu, is the air force's main base.
🇨🇳 WING LOONG · CHINA
PAX again, 18 November 2021, from Airbus imagery dated 2 November: an object "that fits with the measurements of a Wing Loong" — fourteen metres of wingspan — outside a new blue hangar built that September.
⚠️ PAX did not identify the variant from the imagery. If you see "Wing Loong II" anywhere, it is not established.
🇮🇷 MOHAJER-6 · IRAN
Bellingcat, 17 August 2021, from photographs of Abiy Ahmed's visit to Semera airport and two satellite passes. Quote the finding as written, because its author was careful:
"provides a strong indication that these are drones consistent with the Iranian Mohajer-6"
And: "it must be stressed that higher quality imagery would be needed to state anything conclusively."
🇹🇷 AKINCI · TURKEY
The newer, larger Baykar aircraft. Delivered in 2024, per Drone Wars UK. AFP states it plainly in September 2026.
‖ Turkey, China, Iran. Three states sold the aircraft now flying
‖ over one country's civilians.
‖ Not one of them has published a suspension.
