The defense is 29th in points allowed … but it's not the stars. Crosby and Dean's advanced numbers show two guys doing their jobs while the unit falls apart around them:
1) Crosby: 30 pressures (tied 4th among edges), 20.9% pass-rush win rate (4th) — while facing the 2nd-highest double-team rate among edges. He has just 2 sacks because sacks need coverage, and the coverage hasn't held up.
2) Dean: 69.7 overall PFF grade (22nd of 75 linebackers), 71.9 vs the run, but just 61.9 in coverage with a 117.2 passer rating allowed and 10 missed tackles. He was top-10 early — the skid has dragged him down too.
The takeaway: the Raiders' best two defenders are winning their individual battles. The defense is 30th vs the run and 30th in the red zone anyway — because one edge and one linebacker can't cover for the other nine.
