Fulda Gap Francis never blinked.
He stared across the German plains for years, waiting for the Red horde to come storming through.
He had three NCOERs that read:
“Vigilant as hell.”
The Soviet Union collapsed.
He didn’t flinch.
Still hasn’t.
Ivan is still out there…
Francis is out there too—somewhere, crouched behind sandbags, whispering:
“Any day now…”

'Why the capitalist gun is inferior' — Article in The Black Panther newspaper (4 July 1970) comparing the AK-47 and M-16.
In my latest podcast about the Chinese invasion of Tibet I was shooting from the hip and wondering if the free Tibet movement of the 90’s had something to do with America looking for dragons to slay after the collapse of the USSR. To clarify…. 🧵 (short)
I remember an uptick in the Chinese being the baddies during this period which probably put a little wind in “Free Tibet” ‘s sails. Most of that movement’s supporters were not of the typical political persuasion of the ardent cold warriors and/or too young to care (college kids)
The issue of Tibet was still a mark against the last vestiges of communism and could be used as such…but still probably represented the zeal of democracy in the aftermath of the Cold War.
I think it was more of a product of “Pax Americana”, Fukuyama’s “end of history” and such. The dragons we were out to slay weren’t specific ideologies or nations, but obstacles to our brand of liberal democracy globally.
India’s first nuclear test “Smiling Buddha”.
They said it was given that name because it happened on a Buddhist holiday, but it was probably a little way to let China know they’ve got their number too. Relations between India and China fell apart after the invasion of Tibet.

The Chinese civil war has to be one of the most insane moments in human history because what do you mean they were fighting battles on rope bridges over the Yangtze River
