I themed this entire incident and the Newport mafia days in The Tropicana I opened in Newport. The infamous Tropicana was a club back then that Tito Carinci managed. Tito was involved with the Ratterman incident. I invited both to my opening. George politely refused to come when I told him Tito would be there for the “ reunion “ I hired Tito. Great guy. RIP both.
In 1961, a mafia in Kentucky drugged a former NFL quarterback and put him in bed with a stripper. George Ratterman had played for the Cleveland Browns. Now he was running for sheriff, promising to shut down the gambling and prostitution that had made Newport, Kentucky the original “Sin City.” The mob lured him to a hotel suite above the Tropicana nightclub and drugged him. When he came to, he was undressed and in bed with a stripper named April Flowers. Three Newport cops burst in the room to arrest him. But instead of ending his campaign, he fought back and the set-up fell apart. A blood test found the drugs in his system and the stripper later admitted he was unconscious. Ratterman won the election. And with help from FBI agents sent by Robert Kennedy, he cleaned out the town. “In four years I got rid of the gambling and the prostitution,” he said, “and I didn’t get killed.”

This day lives on in my head rent free constantly! This video was taken at @JeffRubys Lexington the last time Keeneland hosted the Breeders Cup in Lexington Ky in 2022. I was so honored to jam on stage with @tobykeith (RIP) and @TheRealJeffRuby (the boss) 💯🙌 This year is the first time the Breeders Cup has come back to Lexington since then… and I’m honored to be performing again on opening night at Jeff Ruby’s Lexington again! It would be nearly impossible to beat this memory from 2022 but I know for a fact that the place is going to be off the hook again! The band and I have grown a lot since 2022… we now have two recorded albums, multiple awards from across the country, we just signed our first label deal, and we are on this years’s Grammy ballot. COME SEE US ON OPENING NIGHT OF BREEDERS CUP THIS FRIDAY 8pm at the best place there is to be in Lexington! We will be performing all night! #breederscup #Keeneland #andrewmooreandhooch #TobyKeith #lexingtonky #jeffruby #memories #friday

My good friend JP Miller owns this dealership. Great guy and extremely generous to The Jeff Ruby Foundation.
Thanks to @BigMoBarrett and @LetsGoBigMoe for the podcast and interview training over the years for @mattponatoski. The @KSRTHESHOW was very complimentary of how well he handled himself for only 18 yrs old 💙🏈⚾️

Some stories stay with you. 💙 Jeff Ruby went from teenage homelessness to a life he once only imagined. Ariana Rodriguez went from foster care to the Miss America stage. We are standing up for vulnerable youth. Thank you for standing with us. ✨
Somebody believed in a homeless kid once. That kid was me. Ariana Rodriguez went from foster care to homelessness as a teenager, and then to the Miss America stage. I’ve heard a lot of speeches. This one stuck.

Ernie Lombardi is in the Hall of Fame.
Johnny Bench was 22 years old in 1970 when he hit 45 home runs, drove in 148 and won the NL MVP as a catcher. He'd been Rookie of the Year two seasons earlier, and two years later he won MVP again. He caught one handed back when most catchers still used two, and he won ten straight Gold Gloves. Number one among the greatest Reds ever, ahead of Pete Rose and every one of his 4,256 hits. Greatest Reds player ever, who's your answer?

When you’ve got guys from Chicago and Kenny Loggins on stage, you don’t sit in the crowd. You grab the mic! Thanks to The Players, and to everyone who joined us at the Jeff Ruby Foundation 3rd Annual Golf Classic. Every dollar we raised goes to kids who need someone in their corner.
