A real corruption of our social fabric is classifying upper class wrongs as evils and lower class wrongs as unfortunate necessities to survival. When you think about it, it’s actually truly condescending to think, “these people are poor, so they cannot be expected to have common sense.” Nganya ‘culture’, with all its hype and pomp, is bedevilled with extreme stupidity; and is a contest to see who can get away with the most reckless stunt as a marker of social status within its ranks. It’s time we’re honest about this. We cannot organize cities, have walkable spaces, and realistically enforce traffic laws if we have a major part of the transport ecosystem being cheered on to be as publicly indisciplined as they can get just because it sounds classist to call them out. Organised young men in any society (especially one with massive inequalities as ours) should not be allowed to believe they can get away with whatever they want for too long. They’re your most industrious group, but equally, they’re potentially your most potent, most consequentially volatile group. Because soon enough, the natural instinct to expand that control will take over and it will spill over into your estates, your communities and even your businesses (if it hasn’t already). You don’t have enough numbers in the entire military to contain the scale of anarchy we’re cooking with ‘nganya culture’ and ‘goons’ in this country.
