⚠️ BREAKING: Student Loan interest rates will rise in September. March's RPI (the figure used each year) has just come in at 4.1%, up from 3.2% in 2025. Full list of changes, including how Plan 2's 6% cap will have a limited impact ⬇️

We've seen this in a few places, but it's INCORRECT. ❌ The interest rate THRESHOLDS have been frozen as a natural knock-on of freezing the repayment threshold. The interest RATE hasn't been frozen, and hasn't been 7.9% since July 2024. cc @Telegraph
This seems to have been ignored - will have a big impact

The Govt is working hard to support students by: ✅increasing the @officestudents grant to £276m to help students from disadvantaged backgrounds. ✅increasing the maintenance loans by 2.8%. ✅established energy rebates for students in private settings.

Lots of talk today about Keir Starmer ditching Labour's pledge to abolish tuition fees. We oppose this u-turn. ⚠ But don't forget the biggest issue affecting students *right now*: Maintenance Loans have not kept up with inflation, and now trail living costs by £439 EVERY MONTH.

🚨 PETITION: INCREASE MAINTENANCE LOANS🚨 We're calling on the gov to close the £1,500 loan shortfall, caused by years of inflation forecast errors. Failing to do so will bake these errors into the system and intensify students' struggles. MORE INFO 👇 savethestudent.org/news/incr…

Big thanks to @marykfoy and other MPs for highlighting this issue, including our research on the shocking shortfall between the loan & living costs. We'd encourage everyone to join us in calling on the government to amend the 2023/24 Maintenance Loan rates and avoid catastrophe.
Today, with 38 colleagues, I wrote to @GillianKeegan about derisory 2.8% rise to Student Maintenance Loan. This'll have disastrous consequences on low & middle income families with talented young people priced out of uni. If you're a student & your MP didn't sign - ask them why.

And there we have it. @halfon4harlowMP @educationgovuk have announced that Maintenance Loans will rise by just 2.8% next year, despite inflation being around 10%. This follows 2022/23, where loans increased by just 2.3%, with inflation again approx 10%. Here's our comment 👇

As @RussellGroup highlighted yesterday, unless the government updates its measures of inflation to reflect reality, students will lose out on as much as £1,500 a year. And that's ON TOP of the existing shortfall. xitter.cf/guardian/status/161246…

But as things stand, that seems unlikely. So, we're once again calling on @halfon4harlowMP and @educationgovuk to do the right thing and help close the devastating shortfall between Maintenance Loans and living costs.

🧵THREAD 🧵 Maintenance Loans in 2023/24 are already a mess, and the government hasn't even announced how much spending money students will have yet. Here's why 👇
