Been seeing a lot of shit being talked- and even more LIES being told about private conversations and what was and wasn’t said in them- today. So imma go ahead and take a crack at this re inaccuracies that I’ve noted. For the record, IDGAF abt Glacier app. Literally couldn’t care less about it. As far as Shawn Ryan goes… I’ll be honest, ever since Charlie, I try to give people a lot more grace. I went hard on Charlie and I had no idea what he was battling behind the scenes. So while I’m not crazy about Shawn platforming that retard spook Sarah Adams- he also gave 4 hours to CO during Tyler’s preliminary. So yeah, he gets grace. Get over it. That said, here we go: 1. In your featured chart you’re comparing a *for-profit* VPN/DNS service that offers a third-party call feature to a *non-profit* messaging app and using the records that for-profit businesses utilize as some kind of gotcha in comparison to the tax-payer subsidized free service provided by the nonprofit (Signal). This is grossly dishonest, aside from being downright stupid. OFC Glacier keeps your payment information on file. They need to get paid. It’s a business started by a bunch of former govt employees, and they’re tryin’ to make money. Good for them. Guess what? If you choose to make a monthly donation to Signal, they too keep your name, address and credit card on file. Crazy how that works huh? But even if they didn’t, why are they being compared? They are completely different services. Signal doesn’t provide a VPN or DNS- which are Glacier’s primary functions. 2. There are no free VPNs. Which means they all store your payment info. And yeah, we get it, Mullvad- the tiny esoteric Swedish server you found that no one has ever heard of- will let you mail them cash and establish a totally anonymous account with a 16 digit number that you have to remember forever bc they aren’t storing it - but honestly, who TF is doing that? Ease of service is an actual metric used to rate apps. But, ofc, Mullvad offers a full service app where you can pay online and they’ll store your payment info for future purchases. Furthermore Mullvad doesnt offer 3rd party calls… so no, this still isn’t apples to apples. 3. The Proton you featured is free and requires no payment info for their most basic service. No calls. To upgrade you must pay $3.99/mo which of course requires you to give them all the boogieman info you spent the whole article crowing about… you know… name, address and CC. Again… WTF are we even doing here??? 4. You did a whole section asserting a bait & switch on phone call data collection changing between 06/15 and 07/24. AFAICT this entire theory is built on archived privacy policy pages. Archives created by a 3rd party… one who chose to archive on June 15th but not on July 13th when the app actually launched. You claim that the privacy policy changed *after* the launch… but again, that assertion is based entirely on when this 3rd party chose to archive the page. How do you know that the July 24th privacy policy isn’t what they launched with on July 13th??? Did you call anyone at Glacier and ask them about this? 5. I hate to break it to folks but Signal does not, in fact, publish every subpoena it receives. I know this for a fact bc I’ve done private contract work on several criminal cases that involved Signal subpoenas and no, those babies aren’t published on their website. At least with Twilio you get a running yearly tally- no such luck with Signal. But of course you knew that, didn’t you? Which is why your article is carefully structured the way it is. (And this isn’t a knock on Signal. It’s actually an indictment of the Patriot Act and the bastardization of the 4th Amendment. But that’s for another post.) Alright that’s enough for now, everyone gets my point. But I assure you, I could keep going. Idk where this is coming from but I know I’m not here for it.
