A productive dialogue session was held today at the parliament between the UN Special Coordinator for Lebanon, Mr. Jean Arnault, and Members of Parliament Paula Yacoubian, Michel Moussa and Melhem Khalaf, regarding the future of UNIFIL and what to expect for South Lebanon in the coming period.
We discussed the risks of a vacuum that could result form a UNIFIL withdrawal, the alternatives proposed should its mandate come to an end, and the possibility of maintaining a UN presence even if in a different format and with reduced personnel. We also addressed options for preserving stability in South Lebanon and the role of the United Nations in the upcoming phase.

I met today with Jean Arnault, Acting UN Special Coordinator for Lebanon, for a timely discussion on the need to keep the social and economic dimensions at the heart of Lebanon’s stabilization and recovery efforts, particularly in the South.
We discussed the importance of moving in parallel on security, recovery and development: supporting the Lebanese Armed Forces and strengthening state authority, while also restoring basic services, protecting livelihoods, and responding to the growing needs of vulnerable communities.
My message was clear: sustainable stability cannot be built through security measures alone. It also requires functioning services, economic opportunity, social protection and a visible state presence alongside communities.
This is especially urgent in areas affected by conflict and displacement, where delays in restoring services and livelihoods risk deepening deprivation and social tension.
We also discussed the importance of better monitoring social conditions on the ground and ensuring that the economic and social track is fully integrated into the broader international conversation on Lebanon’s recovery.
Lebanon’s path forward has to be comprehensive: security, institutions, recovery and social stability must advance together.
