Don't get me wrong i LOVED the CTB era ... not sure we can ever touch '14-'19, or need to -- but it was hard work & a model the game has moved on from.
So.. i can be glad for how this is shaping up NOW, while still holding Tony Bennett up as my all time biggest sports idol.
Entertaining game w @UVAMensHoops insights galore, especially since hoos looked so good against Nova last week.
Glad to see ACC building its power conference record out of the gates!

The frustration with UVA football is real, but the core problem is larger than any player, coach or single individual. In my view, it is a business problem.
Charlottesville (where one of our Good Feet stores resides) is one of the smallest TV markets in the country. Athletics today run on multi-year brand deals, NIL collectives, and revenue flywheels from large alumni bases and proximity to major corporate HQs. UVA lacks the geographical advantages and lacks the scale and reach of Ohio State, Michigan, Texas, or Florida. That is a structural constraint.
UVA’s football fan base is more fragile (not a fault of fans) due to a lack of a winning tradition compared to the power programs—Alabama, Texas, Oklahoma, Ohio State, Michigan, USC. Those are the Amazon, Walmarts and Coca-Colas of college football. They can operate on tradition and confidence that their customers will be back even when they miss. UVA cannot afford many misses and has to be scrappy: more creative, more personal, and more deliberate about every fan, donor, and sponsor. Otherwise the support of the fan base erodes quickly. The football program would make a strong Darden case study on building without the giants’ natural advantages.
In 2021 we were early NIL partners with UVA. We started with Kihei Clark on TV spots, then expanded to other athletes in UVA-logo jerseys, attaching millions in Good Feet advertising to the UVA brand. We followed the university’s approach: not pay-to-play, but real marketing leverage, inviting players to conferences, networking, and speaking opportunities. We did the same for others in football, men’s and women’s basketball, and non-rev sports. We are not a major Fortune 500 brand but we have made meaningful investments and will match our heart with anyone.
Two years ago major money flowed into UVA football. Problem solved, or so it seemed! Emphasis seemed to shift to seven and eight-figure checks. Those are wonderful gifts but that is not a sustainable model. Amazon, Coca-Cola, and Walmart, built flywheels one customer at a time.
Is it possible that those generous donations muddied good strategic thinking? It seems there is need of a strategy that attaches value at every level: the single fan with family at a few games, season-ticket holders and lower-level donors, small businesses attaching to the brand, larger sponsors, mid-tier five- and six-figure donors, and the premium seven-to-eight figure donors. When you are customer focused, you are accountable to those customers. Is it possible, that greater accountability to customers up and down the ladder, could foster better football strategy?
Tradition and humility can go together; tradition and entitlement cannot. Academic excellence and history are strengths, not automatic equalizers to the football powers. Be accountable to the people paying the bills, make hard, strategic decisions, be creative, listen. Embrace being David because you will never be Goliath. Winning will come.
Football and UVA... sigh.
All UVA alums received this email from Carla Williams less than 2.5 months ago.
Since then….
• Got embarrassed by WVU in Charlotte. 11-point loss felt like 30. Made their QB look like a Heisman.
• Got REALLY embarrassed by FSU… a team that’s about to fire their coach. Made a decent QB look like a Heisman.
• Barely beat Syracuse at home… with their 3rd-string and 4th-string quarterbacks.
• Should have won at SMU. Lost due to unbelievable mental mistakes, questionable play calling, and really lousy coaching adjustments.
• Choked at home against Duke. Held their incredible running back in check and still couldn’t score enough points. Outcoached again.
• HISTORICALLY embarrassed by Wake Forest — a school with less resources, a small fanbase, and a newer head coach.
@ADWilliamsUVA make changes, or completely lose the fanbase.
Maybe, but not sure anyone else would have done different. Still, a brutal season. Hoops, please.
You won't find many @ADWilliamsUVA fans bigger than I, but the decision to give Elliott an 8-figure guaranteed extension last year after one single flash-in-the-pan season may end up a mistake so big it outweighs all the many great things she's accomplished.
It's November.
COLLEGE BASKETBALL IS HERE!!
What an eventful first 47 days for @UVAMensHoops
I am so psyched for FAST @UVAMensHoops team, as promised by Coach Odom.
This is gonna be fun.

Super small sample size but the 5-man lineup of
Jerome - Coward - Wells - Boozer - Stewart
Has been the 5th most effective lineup in the NBA.
Jerome - Wells - GG - Boozer - Edey is the 6th most effective.

Former UVA coach Tony Bennett calls Ty Jerome one of the fiercest competitors he's ever seen 👀
@GaryParrishCBS
15. UVA
"Key to season: Outside shooting. The Cavaliers graduated 193 3-pointers. The floor is high for this team with the return of Thijs De Ridder and Johann Grunloh up front. De Ridder could be an All-America, but he needs space to produce those kinds of numbers."
My final preseason Top 25 with Duke as the new No. 1: nytimes.com/athletic/7723836…
gonna be a lot of this.
Is Ty Jerome full time all the time? Tonight is a new place for him, starting the back to back nights .. will his minutes be limited?
What does Ty Jerome remember about his national championship teammates. This is fun. Guess who was 2d on the team in steals?tiktok.com/t/ZTfVLg5Jj/

Through three games, Ty Jerome is averaging more than a point per minute on 56/43/89 shooting splits — which, obviously, is ridiculous.
What's even more ridiculous, though ... is that it might not actually be that ridiculous? tinyurl.com/uaz69x8
