A little too much red wine. I really should have known better. But this crowd really loved their pinot, and I needed it to tolerate their vapid vanities that passed for conversation. I don't even know why they invited me. Or why I came.
I did know I needed some air. So, I slipped out the back door, unnoticed. I was not the only one deep in the bottle. It had been raining, and the ground was damp. Wind whipped around and knocked water from the branches. I started walking away from the house.
That's when I fell. I don't know how I fell, but I fell. Flat on my face on the wet earth. I struggled to get up, but I couldn't see where to put my hands. I was crawling in the dark like an animal. There was something on my face. I opened my mouth to yell. Whatever it was rolled inside. That's when I swallowed.
An irrational wave of panic rolled over me. Finally, I forced myself to stand. Turning in a circle, I could see a kitchen light. I rushed toward their house, composed myself, made my departing pleasantries and sped home.
Finally, in the hopeful solitude of my own four walls, I found my bed, and told myself that was the end of that. The mercy of sleep did not last long. Whatever had been on the outside that I had so foolishly swallowed was now on the inside. Only now, it was not one; it was many. It was crawling, crawling, crawling through me, devouring me from within.

science—I breathe in his ear,
energy's more like magic.

High heels clack
down an empty corridor.
Her journey, once a title,
now a small footnote.
Charcoal in the sky.
Tapers gutter on the wall.
Windows so vast
they make her small.
An unworn cocktail dress,
an unsent love note,
a languid body—
untouched Bordeaux.
