Sadly, a not uncommon story. Sweeps are traumatizing in of itself. But the trauma leads to other trauma, and so on. We need our city to care for individuals more than the property where the individuals are.
I met an unhoused woman who has two years of disability payments sitting in a bank account she cannot access because she does not have an ID. After months we finally got her birth certificate and then she woke up to a sweep where all of her paperwork was thrown away.

If Jesus is the truth and the light and you don’t know the history of your people, nor care to establish any respectable relationship in embracing your ancient #Indigenous heritage on this land, then by your own Christian doctrine- you’re not even a follower of Jesus. – at Los Angeles, CA

The horror. A bunch of outsiders have to run down the street and see poor and destitute humans in a public space, ruining their privileged extracurricular social activities. Where is the dept of justice? 🤦🏽‍♂️ – at Los Angeles, CA

We reject @LAPDChiefMoore's proposal about 'pretext' stops, which claims to restrict these stops, but in reality just gives officers ways to continue the same abusive, racist behavior under a new guise. Join the fight bit.ly/LAPCFAILS #LAPCFails

We were appalled to see this.
Here’s something that makes me feel bad inside. This is an encampment on Rose in Venice. Only, it’s not real, it’s a movie set. It’s a movie set of a homeless encampment literally around the corner from a real homeless encampment. They even covered real street art with their own.

Temperatures tonight will be in the 30s. A stark reminder of why we need to make it easier to provide housing and shelter. We hear a lot about the need for a state of emergency. That means removing obstacles to bringing people indoors.
Those of you living in the real world may be missing a piece of weird drama happening right now on the Westside. Neighborhood Council's are panicking about a motion by @MikeBoninLA @cd4losangeles and @mhdcd8 to study ways to build more homeless shelters more quickly. <Thread>

Temperatures are plummeting to 36 degrees tonight. We made a map of winter shelters. There are a total of 358 total winter shelter beds for over 60,000 people. google.com/maps/d/edit?mid=1…

.@newhouseforla and his segregationist supporters LOVE to talk about how homelessness is an emergency that needs a FEMA-like response. Can you imagine if during a natural disaster, these NIMBYs told churches they could not open their doors to help people?
We don't need to change zoning. OFW was cleared and people housed in about a month - using current zoning and existing shelters/housing. Let's keep it simple. Clear encampments in 30 days, and shelter/house people on the streets - with ongoing services, so folks stay housed.

God forbid we allow churches to help address our homelessness crisis by providing emergency shelter to the unhoused. These people’s cruelty knows no bounds.

Of course @TheoHen95302259 of @WeTheUnhoused used Venice as a stage to make this. Genius.

This is true. There also shouldn't be people ticketed, arrested, traumatized by law enforcement, and stolen of the little they have to survive because of these same failures.
There should not be people dying on the streets of Los Angeles every night because we have failed to provide affordable and accessible housing and services.

Can concur 💯
I’m at the camp @ShellenbergerMD was at. He tried to spin everyone here is a drug addict, which is false. I just talked to a young woman taking care of her disabled mom that’s living here. Both are sober. This is also an extremely clean encampment. @ShellenbergerMD is dishonest!

From 1990 - 2020, the Black population in Venice decreased by 45%. (From 1960-1990 it was stable). Stop the trend. Data courtesy @PacificUrbanism #BlackHistoryMonth #RedliningIn2022

💯! LAMC 41.18 is modern day redlining, the state once again segregating our communities. Blacks make up 8% of LA County’s population, but are 42% of the unhoused population. Structural racism, discrimination and unconscious bias is sadly endorsed here as status quo.
LAMC 41.18 is a housing version of the #BlackCodes which criminalized Black public existence to maintain the slave class. (#capitalism survives on slave labor) But instead of 41.18 directly targeting Black folx, it targets the public existence of the poor & Unhoused. Same spirit.

A must read thread. Re: #Venice and #RecallBonin effort. Homie killed it with accuracy.
An impulsive 🧵 on why the failure to #recallbonin is bigger than Mike Bonin. I lived in Oakwood Venice when I was a kid. I loved living there, and there were also serious problems. I saw death and drugs, and poverty was very much the norm. This was the late 80’s/early 90’s…

1. Figured out how hosts are getting around home sharing ordinance in #LosAngeles . Hosts set minimum stay to 30 days on #Airbnb (legal). Guests contact host directly for 3-4 day stay. Now what?

We’ll take impulsiveness anytime. A thoughtful look at the Venice residents who don’t get it, who made a recall about them and not leadership, and who want to turn Venice into a Brentwood by the sea. “This wasn’t about Bonin, it was about you, and you failed.”

We’re a day late for MLK Day, but still every day is right to quote and fight for his beliefs in social justice. When applied to homelessness, especially in West LA, and the rallying cry of NIMBYs to fix the social issue by criminalization of the poor, this quote speaks volumes.
Venice with more yoga and spiritual stores per capita and being a “liberal bastion”… Systemic racism and white supremacy is prevalent in both left and right wings
