Fall arrives today at 8:05 pm ET! 🍂 Today’s Fall Equinox marks the start of astronomical fall in the Northern Hemisphere and is the moment when the Sun is directly over Earth’s equator. From now through the Winter Solstice on December 21, the Northern Hemisphere will receive increasingly less direct sunlight as Earth continues along its tilted orbit around the Sun.

The new Drought Monitor is out. There isn't a significant change from last week, but a little bit more of southern Wisconsin has been added to the Abnormally Dry category. Most of the state received less than an inch of rain in the past week and soils continue to dry out.

A heat dome over the U.S. causes temperatures to soar across the country, while monsoon season is kicking off in the Southwest U.S. The outline of the heat dome and monsoon moisture can be seen from clouds and water vapor arching from the Pacific Ocean and across the continent.

Starting this weekend, Major to Extreme HeatRisk will begin spreading into the Midwest, Deep South, and southwestern U.S. As blistering as the daytime highs will be in many areas, record-warm morning lows will heighten the danger for those unable to seek cool shelter. Ensure your loved ones and neighbors stay safe from the heat, and remain #WeatherReady.
