Croydon deserves more affordable homes, investment and a thriving town centre - not more obstacles! At last Full Council, we challenged Mayor Perry’s proposal to increase building costs which carry a number of risks that could impede the future of our town centre 🌃🏠🌹 👇🏽 👇🏽

Lighting bring installed in Wandle Park, funded by the Labour Government. We’ve listened to residents’ concerns about the impact on nearby homes, wildlife and bat habitats, and have asked the Council to take these into account. #waddon @RowennaDavis @Ellily2 @SamAttwater01

Almost 1,700 homes stand empty in Croydon while thousands of households are stuck in temporary accommodation costing millions to the Council. Our Shadow Cabinet Member for Homes, Cllr Ponnuthurai calls on Tory Exec Mayor, Jason Perry, to commit to a robust empty homes strategy👇🏽

#publicspaceprotectionorder in #Waddon - 13 months wait for signage - we need the council to implement it so the police can enforce them . #PublicSafety @Ellily2 @RowennaDavis @SamAttwater01 @CroydonLabour

We are aware of a burst water main on Duppas Hill Road. Thames Water are currently investigating the leak, and we have contacted the Council. In the meantime, please get in touch with us if you are affected.

Look at the size of this fly-tip! No matter how many times residents report dumped rubbish in Waddon, it comes back with a vengeance - all under Mayor Perry’s watch. Croydon deserves better than a failing Tory administration that can’t even keep our borough clean. #flytipping

Since January this year, the @MayorofLondon has called in and approved more than 10,000 homes that had stalled or were rejected by boroughs. @SadiqKhan meant it when he said City Hall would back the builders. insidehousing.co.uk/news/cit…

🧵1/2 Croydon Council’s been allocated £19.7M by the Labour Government’s new 3 year Crisis & Resilience Fund which focuses on tackling the underlying causes of financial hardship. Our Shadow Cabinet Member for Homes @Ellily2 talks about how the grant can help #Croydon residents.

This is exactly what we need - #croydon has approx 3,946 empty homes , 1,639 long-term . Whilst 3,283 households in temporary accommodation and 8600 on the housing register waiting list - I have asked the council to take action and will push keep pushing- this is so welcome.
Labour won’t sit back and allow empty dwellings to be left to rot. Today, we’re strengthening powers for local leaders to take over empty and derelict homes and put them back into use.

We've all walked past them. The empty shop that's been boarded up for years. The old cinema gathering dust. The building everyone says, "someone should do something about that." Well, that's exactly what I'm doing. We're investing £210 million to help bring neglected high street buildings back into use - turning empty spaces into community hubs, health centres, shared workspaces, cafés and the local services that people actually want to see. The funding will also help communities save spaces like pubs and sports clubs and support co-operatives so local people can share directly in their area's success. People don't measure growth by looking at a spreadsheet. They measure it by looking at their local high street. That's how we restore pride and bring hope back. Not by telling people things are getting better, but by giving them the power to see and feel the difference where they live.

It’s estimated that one in five women in the UK will experience a miscarriage in their lifetime. But if you lose a pregnancy before 24 weeks, there is currently no legal right to bereavement leave. I don’t think that’s right. Losing a pregnancy can be devastating. You and your partner shouldn’t have to worry about going straight back to work. So we’re changing the law. From April, women and their partners will be entitled to two weeks off after any pregnancy loss. And we’re making wider changes, with new rights to time off when you lose someone you love. When you’re grieving, you deserve the time and space to do that.

Survivors of rape and sexual offences in our city deserve justice as quickly as possible. I’ve long called for urgent action on court backlogs, so I strongly welcome today’s announcement that every Crown Court will get at least one dedicated courtroom for rape and serious sexual offence cases. Additional improvements will put survivors’ needs at the heart of the justice process and encourage more victims to come forward.

Normal? Not at all. Birdsong fades. Summer temperatures soar. The danger is we simply adjust – but we shouldn’t. We cannot allow the climate crisis to rewrite our idea of what's normal.

Home Office minister, Sarah Jones, reacts to @SamCoatesSky exclusive report on a leak of Sir Keir Starmer's failed fightback plan to stay in Downing Street. Jones defended Burnham's policy saying he 'has a very different agenda [from Starmer], and it's a very clear agenda'.
