MY NYSC CAMP EXPERIENCE
EPISODE 3: MY FIRST DAY AT YIKPATA CAMP
From Offa to Ilorin was less than an hour. I arrived Post Office in ilorin and I boarded a bike from the post office to Maraba, where I got a taxi going to Iykpata. I think we paid ₦3,000 for the trip.
My people, the journey to that camp needs a story of its own.
As we drove farther away, I started seeing houses that looked like something straight out of an old movie. You know those traditional houses with unusual shapes and roofs made from straw instead of zinc? That’s the kind of houses we were passing.
The road was so lonely, too!
Imagine travelling on a road like that in the middle of the night.
We kept going and going. I think it took us about three hours to finally get to camp.
And guess what? The camp wasn’t even fenced all around!
When we arrived, we went to the officers at the entrance for luggage inspection. They checked our bags to make sure we weren’t bringing in prohibited items.
When they opened my bag, they saw cheese balls and plenty of snacks.
One of the officers looked at me and asked, “Are you a baby? Why are you carrying all these things in your bag?”
I just smiled.
There was also a sachet drink my friend had given me. It looked like Best Cream, and the officers refused to let me take it inside. They seized it!
After checking everything, they allowed me in.
Next was registration.
We were asked to provide passport photographs and other documents. I opened my bag to bring out my passport, only to discover that I HAD LEFT IT IN OFFA!
I was so angry with myself.
And once you enter camp, you can’t just go out whenever you feel like it. Besides, with all the transport stress and expenses, asking my friend to bring it wasn’t a practical option.
So I had to find somewhere to take new passport photographs and make the necessary photocopies before submitting my documents.
As I was running around trying to sort everything out, I noticed a handsome guy sitting quietly, staring at me.
But honestly, I didn’t pay him much attention. I had too many things to sort out.
Eventually, I completed my registration, got assigned to Platoon 9, and received my hostel allocation. I was in Hall 4.
Now, let me tell you about the drama that happened when I entered my room.
I had shared a taxi with a girl on the way to camp, and I really wanted us to stay in the same room. I’m not the most social person, so I thought it would be nice to have someone I already knew.
Unfortunately, we didn’t get the same room, even though we were in the same hostel. Our rooms were directly opposite each other.
When I entered my room, I discovered that the bed assigned to me was an upper bunk, but someone was already occupying it.
I asked the girl to show me the paper she had been given. That’s when I realised that her allocation was actually for a lower bunk!
But because I’m a peaceful person who doesn’t like unnecessary arguments, I had to let it go and settled for a lower bunk.
However, she spent only about two days in camp before leaving because she was going to law school.
When she left, another girl wanted to take over that space.
I said, “No, please. This is my space, and I’m taking it back!”
And that was how I finally reclaimed my rightful upper bunk.
As for my roommates, there was one girl who was incredibly sweet, funny and beautiful. She had a personality and way of expressing herself that stood out from the others.
Then there was @Sunitasam2
I liked her because she was different. She came to camp with a small travel box, just like me, and she minded her business. She was the kind of person I naturally connected with.
And the beautiful thing is that Anita and I are still friends today. We still talk and vent to each other, even long after camp.
Looking back, I didn’t know what to expect when I arrived at Yikpata.
Oya, let me stop here before this episode becomes a novel.
MY NYSC CAMP EXPERIENCE
EPISODE 2: THE JOURNEY TO KWARA STATE
When I finished university, my family wanted me to go for NYSC immediately. But honestly, NYSC was the last thing I wanted to do.
Still, I had to prepare for Batch A Stream 1 in February 2024.
My family wanted me to serve in Abuja because they believed there were more opportunities there. Me? Abuja was the LAST place on my mind. I wanted somewhere like Lagos, Ibadan or Uyo.
They paid for direct posting in Abuja, but that didn’t work.
When my call-up letter finally came out, I checked it and saw KWARA STATE. 😭
My family suggested I try to redeploy at camp, but I wasn’t ready for that stress. I decided to go and serve in Kwara.
Now, let me tell you how my journey started.
The day before travelling, I went to Holy Ghost Park in Enugu to find a transport company going directly to Ilorin.
I eventually found one. They charged me ₦30,000, and I booked my trip.
The next morning, my mum dropped me off at the park around 6 a.m. When I got there, only two passengers were around, but the manager assured me that more people were coming.
As they started filling out the manifest, I noticed that most of the passengers were going to Lagos.
I asked the people in charge, “Hope you people know I’m going to Ilorin?”
They said yes.
My people, I entered that vehicle with my two eyes open.
Only for these people to drop me at Ore!
The passengers going to Lagos had paid ₦20,000, while I had paid ₦30,000 to Ilorin. They gave me just ₦6,000 as a refund.
I WAS FURIOUS.
I called the manager and told him exactly what I thought about the way they had handled the trip. After some back and forth, he refunded me another ₦3,000.
Imagine the stress I was going through before even getting to NYSC camp. 😭
They took me to another park in Ore where I could get a vehicle to Ilorin.
I was still sitting there, angry and minding my business, when a woman selling chin-chin approached me.
I told her I wasn’t interested.
Then I heard a guy ask, “Are you calm now?”
I turned around.
OMO! 😭😂
This very cute guy was sitting there!
When it was time to enter the vehicle, he asked me to sit in the front seat with him.
We left Ore around 2 p.m., and the journey was LONG. These people kept stopping to pick up and drop off passengers.
At different stops, whenever people were selling snacks, this guy would offer to buy me something. I kept declining.
When we got to Akure in Ondo State, they were selling hot akara and bread. He offered to buy some for me, but I said no.
And mind you, because of all the anger and frustration from what had happened earlier, I had completely forgotten the 1k wànù údárà I bought in Enugu in the sienna and the quantity was plenty! 😭😂 I left the whole thing behind.
When we stopped at another place in Ondo State, he offered to buy me the udara/agbalumo. This time, he bought quite a lot, and we ate it together as the journey continued.
When we were about to move again, I bought two bottles of water and gave him one.
Eventually, we got to Osogbo in Osun State.
That was where this guy got off because he lives in Osogbo! We exchanged numbers.
But my journey wasn’t over yet.
We were transferred to another vehicle, which was going to Kwara State. So, we said our goodbyes, and I continued my journey.
After all the stress, I finally arrived at Offa around 9 p.m.
My childhood friend, who was schooling in Offa, came to CAPTAIN COOK to pick me. She made spaghetti and stew for me that night.
The next morning, she took me to the park where i boarded ilorin vehicle. She bought me lots of junks and a bucket.
Finally, I was on my way to NYSC camp at Yipata!
But before you ask, the cute guy I met on my way to Kwara and I actually kept in touch, even while I was in camp. We were still talking after camp, too.
Unfortunately, about a week after I left camp, I travelled to Benin to visit my sister, and I LOST MY PHONE. 😭
Just like that, we lost contact.

They will give you scholarship abroad and still be giving you weekly stipends.
Inside that stipend, you could even buy a plot of land back home before graduation.
But here in my country, you will have to be indebted to be accepted into a scholarship that you're not even sure yet what to do with the certificate.
Let's keep pretending only politicians are wicked.

There’s nothing wrong with starting over if it means moving towards growth and progress. Put your ego aside, be willing to learn, and give yourself the chance to become better. Starting again doesn’t mean you’ve failed.

I just finished a meeting where they offered the contractor a 200 million upfront payment for a Rice mill company project worth over 1.5 billion.
After the meeting, the contractor said the first upfront payment is too low, so they either increase it or he's not going to accept the offer😳.

Your husband cheated on you and got another woman pregnant. You found out and filed for divorce.
You left the house you both struggled to build and started raising your children alone, with little or no support from him.
The other woman moves in with her child. They become a complete family, and her child grows up with a father, while yours only get to speak to theirs over the phone.
You struggled to raise children who still bear the surname of the man who cheated on you.
Years later, when your daughter will be getting married, he will show up to collect her bride price.
So, who really lost?
Yes, he cheated on you. But looking at how everything turned out, who lost more in the end?
