Rick Carlisle uses a game show analogy for calling timeouts: “It’d be great if you could buy timeouts like vowels on @WheelofFortune. Because in 3 or 4 games this year I’ve called additional timeouts. Unlike the Wheel of Fortune where you pay $250 out of your earnings, they cost a technical free throw and possession, if the other team doesn’t already have possession. Strategically, I’ve tried to take those when the other team has possession to lessen the penalty, but that’s an idiotic conversation.”
