I’m teaching a class on power and politics in Latin America in 8 1/2 hours so I bid you all good night.

Lula wins, and it wasn’t particularly close — 3.5% or more than 4 million votes.
It’s an epic comeback and we will need time to fully understand it. But one thing is clear — the extension in voting hours was not the difference maker in this race.
Relief. And thinking hard about what comes next. But mostly relief. That was too close. Congratulations to Lula and the PT, and mostly to Brazilian civil society which mobilised in a way so many other countries- my own included - have failed to when the chips are down.
Nobody should underestimate the extraordinary rearguard action the Brazilian left has fought over the last three weeks but two very worrying factors remain: Lula/the PT have to contend with the most right-wing parliament in the hemisphere, and the country remains deeply divided
Surely he did this to cover his arse when links to all those who cancelled buses come out?!
The claim that extending voting (only partially executed) was a corrupt trick by the incumbent (through his former lawyer on the Supreme Court) is greatly weakened by the fact that Flavio’s own campaign also asked for voting to be extended, albeit in specific weather-affected areas (which are also, of course, right-wing strongholds)
At what point do the weight of collective acts of electoral interference necessitate a halt for investigations, criminal proceedings etc? There is so much being reported now.
One of my most normie opinions is that Dvořák 9 is really good. It can be played twee or mawkish for sure, but done right it’s transformative; the core optimism (caveatted by underlying melancholy and danger) is incredibly uplifting when it’s handled properly.
“My knowledge of that is minimal, and that’s why I’m constantly being wheeled out to make glib defences of genocide”
Mike Tapp: 'Zionism isn't ethnic cleansing!'
Shehab Khan: 'So why can a Jewish guy in London get Israeli citizenship but a displaced Palestinian can't?'
Mike Tapp: '...I didn't know that. That doesn't sound equal to me.'
The absolute intellectual collapse. He spent whole time defending the ideology, only to admit he doesn't know how it actually works on the ground
It’s fine. If your objection is that it’s tilted to the left, my retort would be that the right has produced nothing worth reading (even hate-reading) for generations.
The contemporary section of @Columbia's core curriculum is a beauty.
Nothing to see here, move on
Be ready… because we’re not! Great government we have, truly inspirational. theguardian.com/politics/202…
