"I'll have no apprentices next year" the salon owner told us, compared to her usual tally of 12. It isn’t for lack of interest. Young people phone or turn up at her door almost every day hoping to be taken on. Some parents have even offered to cover the cost themselves so their child isn't NEET. The problem is what it now costs to keep a salon open and employing staff. Labour’s jobs tax, business rates and energy bills have all gone up, and customers are paying for it every time they go for a haircut. Some owners have stopped employing stylists and now rent out chairs to self-employed workers instead, which keeps them under the VAT threshold. That leaves the salons who keep staff on the payroll and train the next generation at a disadvantage. I heard this first hand with @KemiBadenoch and Shadow Cabinet colleagues this #BritishBeautyWeek, and the message was clear: these businesses want to hire, we just need to back them. That’s why @Conservatives will cut National Insurance for 21 to 24-year-olds and cut business rates for most high street shops. That's how we'll get Britain working.

Politics is a great career, for any age, at any stage. It was wonderful to join with @Brave_Starts to talk about building a second successful career in politics, taking experience and expertise into public service.

Labour aren’t listening to women. In fact they want them to stay silent. @KemiBadenoch and the @Conservatives will always listen and speak up for women and girls.

What is it with the Labour Party not being able to handle strong, capable Conservative women speaking truth they don’t like? @LauraTrottMP is spot on in her fight to get these schools open for parents and pupils.
No Andy McDonald, I will not “zip it”. I’m speaking up for parents, pupils, teachers and law abiding people in the area. I’m doing my job, Lucy Powell should do hers and do everything she can to keep schools open.

Delighted to be joining the Shadow Education team and serving as a senior Whip. As a strong advocate for families, care experienced children and young people, SEND and keeping children safe online since my election, I’m excited to be part of the team shaping our policy on this.

Not everything has to be looked at through the lens of discrimination. Conservatives managed to choose our first woman leader 51 years ago. Meanwhile Labour are celebrating Andy Burnham as their first female Prime Minister. Claire has been promoted because she is excellent and Conservatives believe in meritocracy. If Harriet is worried about discrimination, there is plenty in her own party to keep her busy. Boris Johnson promoted me to the Treasury while I was on maternity leave in 2020. Nobody did a podcast episode on it because we didn’t think it was remarkable. He just knew I could do the job. Women do not need patronising theories to explain their success. That is the point.
Time was, @ClaireCoutinho, that women had to conceal pregnancy, fearing the sack. We fought against maternity discrimination so that women could be promoted on merit not sacked for pregnancy. I’m glad you’ve escaped mat discrimination. But it’s still a problem. How about siding with us to banish it? @ThenScrewed

I’m delighted to have been appointed Shadow Parliamentary Under Secretary of State, and a Whip in the Shadow Defra team. I’m really looking forward to continuing to hold this Government to account for its policies affecting our farming communities...

How revealing. The left don’t think a pregnant woman can be promoted on merit, only as a symbol of ‘progressiveness.’ I may be growing some feet and eyeballs, but my brain is just fine. Glad to be a Conservative because we don’t define women by their maternity status.
'It's a very progressive thing to do' Kemi Badenoch thinks of herself as 'anti-woke', but @HarrietHarman thinks the Tory reshuffle suggests otherwise. Sky News Insider requires a paid subscription. UK only. 18+. Find out more: trib.al/C1Vvzoj

We’re really pleased to see so many talented women MPs both join and continue to serve in the new shadow cabinet. This is what happens when candidates are selected on quality, not quotas.

From the rape gangs to securing safe spaces - Labour has failed women and girls time and time again. As Shadow Women and Equalities Minister, I will hold Labour to account to get the protections, safety and dignity our women and girls deserve.

Thanks to Kemi for asking me to take on this role - I can’t wait to press on with the work of my constituency neighbour Andrew Bowie who has been such a champion for all things Scotland. Scotland is a powerhouse for industry and opportunity. From defence to oil & gas, farming to fishing and whisky to tourism we have so much to offer and to build on. I am shameless in wanting Scotland to be the best place in the UK to live, work, grow a business and bring up a family. A place that attracts those with aspiration and ambition and rewards success. Working with Russell Findlay MSP, my colleagues at Holyrood and those across Westminster, I’ll be pressing both the SNP and Labour governments so we can see a thriving Scotland that is contributing to and benefiting from a strong, growing UK.
LATEST: @HarrietCross_MP is our new Shadow Scottish Secretary. Harriet will be a strong voice for Scotland, focused on delivering for people across the country, growing the economy and standing up for Scotland’s place in our United Kingdom. 🇬🇧
