True story: When an American soldier finally came home from deployment overseas, he thought the hardest part of his journey was behind him—until he realized the stray dog who kept him sane in a combat zone had been left behind. Army Specialist Jeremy Ferris bonded deeply with a dog named Sadie while stationed in the Middle East, finding comfort and loyalty amid the daily trials of service. When his deployment ended, the thought of leaving her to fend for herself broke his heart. Thanks to the tireless efforts of the veteran-supporting organization Paws of War, a massive logistical and emotional mission was launched to bring Sadie halfway across the world from Jordan to Connecticut. The moment they were finally reunited on American soil is a pure reminder of the unbreakable bond between a soldier and a faithful animal. It’s a testament to the fact that our troops carry their compassion wherever they go, and that heroes come in all forms—including four-legged ones who watch our backs when we are far from home.
