And lo it came to pass.

Good Morning from Germany, where one of Europe’s biggest landlords calls the country “uninvestable.” Heimstaden is withholding fresh capital over Berlin’s expropriation plans. It owns 20,000 apartments in the city worth ~€5bn and estimates a potential €1bn loss. Its hybrid bond has plunged from ~98 cents in August to 82.5. The irony: a policy meant to tackle the housing shortage risks driving away investment without building a single new home. bloomberg.com/news/articles/…

EU’s been told by many wiser heads than mine that it’s too obsessed with regulation—its insatiable fetish for power and control is WHY Europe is now performing so badly.
This recent clip of 🇩🇪 Chancellor talking to Nvidia CEO shows they aren’t listening.
We need a change of mindset at the heart of the EU blob, and this current political class seem incapable of acknowledging their limits and their failures.
Gripped by hubris, they don’t see that they are the problem, or that the best solution for everyone but them is that they resign.
Normally, the media would do their job and pressure our failing elite into facing up to their failings, and inevitable resignations would likely follow.
But much of state-aligned media in Europe today has stopped holding power to account. Rather than question those with the fat salaries who are in control, they’ve turned around, and are now directing their scrutiny at the people.
They now push establishment narratives, including classic authoritarian tropes like: the people voted “incorrectly”, or the advanced age and lack of education of some voters somehow makes their vote count for less, or the most popular one today: that voters can’t possibly be coming to these “incorrect” conclusions alone, and that a foreign enemy must be behind ALL the political discord at home today.
So, elite incompetence is destroying Europe’s economy. Their hubris means they’ll blame anyone but them. The media is too closely aligned with power and its perks to do their job properly anymore. And now we reach the tragic final stage: the Russians/Chinese/Muslims did this to us. They must pay. You must now go to war.

I'm noticing the growing possibility that Europe becomes very poor in the course of the next 10-20 years. You have the following factors:
- Heavy industry totally uncompetitive against China, automakers etc. rapidly losing ground
- Services industry totally uncompetitive against AI
- No natural resources, or regulatory hurdles making their extraction impossible
- No access to the new economy (no AI, no data centers, uncompetitive energy sector)
- Client states caught in one-way welfare ratchets, spend reallocation + investment well-nigh impossible
This seems under-contemplated. And we're talking really, seriously dirt poor: taken to its logical conclusion, many countries will have much, much smaller services and manufacturing industries -- economies may become much more heavily skewed toward natural resources and energy markets, where Europe has made it impossible for itself to compete.
And I'm not saying that this is likely to happen, it's an extreme case. But the probability is greater than zero and appears to be growing. The EV of that is so negative that it's surprising to me that it's not coming up more.

BREAKING: Iran has drawn up detailed plans to attack the 7 major undersea Internet cables in the Gulf as soon as the US and Israel attack it again, per two senior Iranian officials to Reuters.
Iran says it would aim to prevent repairs after any attack to prolong the disruption to communications and internet connections.
"If Iran is attacked, there will be no more red lines, from undersea cables to military bases, including covert ones." The official warned US not to "play with fire," saying Iran has full access to the cables and could easily destroy them.
More than 99% of international data traffic travels through undersea cables. Iran warned this month that US-linked data centres and AI facilities across the Gulf will also be targeted.
