the mental gymnastics to deny a calorie surplus leads to fat gain and caloric deficit to fat loss are hilarious. do these people even know they are confirming the relevance of net calories? "you won't gain fat from eating 1,000,000 calories of uranium!" um yeah, you can’t digest uranium. so those 1,000,000 calories in become 1,000,000 calories out. "100 calories of sugar and 100 calories of fat cause different hormonal responses! ha!" ok, so while the calories in are the same, the calories out are different. it’s still calories in, calories out, you just ignored the out part. “i increased my calorie consumption and lost weight. since i increased my calories i was in a caloric surplus!” yeah, again, you’re ignoring the calories out part. you increased your calories in, but calories out also increased, so net calories were at a deficit. “your body isn’t a bomb calorimeter! your body doesn’t know what a calorie is. calories are just a measure of heat!” come on now, stop acting like this is a strong argument. it’s one of the weaker ones. calories represent energy, so a caloric surplus is an energy surplus and a caloric deficit is an energy deficit. but ultimately, the net of what goes in and what goes out matters. if you don’t like calories or energy, you can call it oogalaboogala, leprechaun checkmarks, or flapdoodles. if you are determined you have lost fat in a caloric (or energy, oogalaboogala, leprechaun checkmark, or flapdoodle) surplus, please contact guinness world records (@GWR). if they grant you an award, i will be the first to congratulate you.

"I ate in a calorie deficit and didn't lose any weight" No. You did not.
if you only ate 1000 calories a day of all oreos you would lose weight because you are in a caloric deficit. if you ate 8000 calories a day of all oreos you would gain weight because you are in a caloric surplus. if you only ate 1000 calories a day of all steak you would lose weight because you are in a caloric deficit. if you ate 8000 calories a day of all steak you would gain weight because you are in a caloric surplus.

"Superheroes. They all live in New York." 😂🗽💪🏻
I asked 30 Japanese 12-year-olds one question. "What do you think of when you hear 'America'?" (My nephew's teacher let me visit his class. I was not prepared.) "Hamburgers the size of my head." "Everything is big. Even the milk." "Cowboys." Then a boy asked me, "Do cowboys still exist?" I said yes. The whole class cheered. "They went to the moon." I told them only Americans have ever walked on it. The room went completely silent. Respect. "The best baseball in the world. Even Ohtani had to go there." "Superheroes. They all live in New York." Then a quiet girl in the back raised her hand. "My grandma says when the tsunami came, American soldiers came to help her town. She still has a photo with them on her fridge." Nobody said anything for a while. Then the teacher asked, "Who wants to go to America someday?" Every hand went up. Including the teacher's.
