I usually don’t humor ongoing OW Twitter banter, but this one I will speak on. There has been a lot of argument that a manager is not qualified to manage if they are not also competing at the highest level of play alongside their players. That is flat out untrue. Being Top 500 does not mean someone would make a good manager, and not being Top 500 does not mean someone would make a bad one. I have successfully managed competitive rosters across T2 for 4+ years. I owned a T2 org and managed multiple rosters for the majority of that time. My peak? Like Plat. And I have no interest in hard grinding the game to improve. I’ve also seen criticism of managers whose players queue with them and effectively carry them into higher ranks. Personally, that’s not something I subscribe to. I don’t want or need my players to carry me to Masters. But that’s my preference, not a standard I’m going to impose on everyone else. Who are we to decide how a manager is allowed to bond with their roster? Players smurf, play on alts, off-role, and queue below their normal level to play with friends all the time. If a roster enjoys playing ranked together, I don’t suddenly see that as some indictment of their manager’s qualifications. There ARE managers I think deserve criticism. If you’re collecting 3+ rosters, building no relationship with your players, spending no meaningful time around your teams, dropping scrim contact in Discord and disappearing, then I question what exactly you’re providing as their manager. Your players should know you. You should know them. You should understand their needs, personalities, goals and concerns well enough to actually advocate for them. You can’t do that effectively if your relationship with the roster begins and ends at being their scrim bot. A manager’s job is to build relationships, manage connections, advocate for their players, handle conflict, maintain a functional environment, and make organizational decisions in the best interest of the roster. Should they understand the competitive environment they’re working in? Absolutely. Should they recognize the limits of their own expertise and defer to players/coaches on gameplay-specific decisions? Also absolutely. A good manager doesn’t need to be capable of playing at the same level as their players. They need to understand the environment well enough to know what they know, what they don’t, and whose expertise should inform a decision. Gameplay expertise and managerial competence are two different skill sets. If we want to criticize managers, criticize them for how well they manage, not how well they play Overwatch.

Hard end for Tanuki this season. Early season was brutal, from LFO to rebuilding the team not once, not twice, but THREE times. So proud of what this team accomplished in just a month and a half and how they’ve grown. Incredibly grateful for the offer to stay with my team as their manager for season 10. 4 days off and then we get to WORK
