An internal model at OpenAI has produced a claimed refutation of ETH! Russell Impagliazzo, Mohan Paturi, and I have been asked to help organize an open and independent examination of this claim. 1/4

There is an (unpatchable?) supply-chain zero-day in PyTorch autograd that allows a regularization term to use the model's weights as RAM and SGD as its CPU clock to run any computation during training.

1/9 Current optimizers are static during training. What if the optimizer could think and react while the network trains? We let an agent watch the training dynamics and rewrite the optimizer's source code as training goes: a reactive optimizer. In every language and image setting we tried that has no tuned recipe, it matches or beats the best recipe one can one-shot, and it guards against loss spikes and overfitting by itself. In the near future, optimization decisions may belong to agents, not humans. 📝 xingjianbai.com/reactive-opt… 💻 Try it on your task: github.com/xingjian-bai/opal 🧵

"For when we have explained the wonderful, unmasked the hidden pattern, a new wonder arises at how complexity was woven out of simplicity. The aesthetics of natural science and mathematics is at one with the aesthetics of music and painting—both inhere in the discovery of a partially concealed pattern." 🤔

This is a fascinating time for math because there are several dimensions in which the machine is still far from demonstrating superiority over humans and yet we are beggining to see the emergence of a new religious practice of slop production in the name of the machine.

regarding economics of AI: most economists are - understandably - focused on the question "when / if does AI automate most human workers?" this is a separate question from the other important question: "when / if is there a productivity explosion?" i don't think the latter is predicated on the former

I recommended desk rejections (DR) for 5 out of 14 submissions, as an #ICLR2027 Area Chair. Story behind this: I did not use any LLM detection tools, which are unnecessary and should not be used for judging DR. These submissions shared some shockingly basic problems in scientific writing, and therefore each paper only took me about 10 mins (thank God) to identify and report the issues. 1. Undefined jargon. Writing 101: Your paper must be self-contained. If a term isn't standard knowledge in the field, it should be defined. 2. Not analyzing or pretending to analyze results. Experimental analysis is about providing insights, not simply repeating numbers from figures and tables. Bro, I can read the numbers myself. 3. Missing citations. Scientific claims need support, either from existing literature or in-paper empirical evidence. Fewer than three citations in an entire introduction? Either the work is a once-in-a-century masterpiece, or the claims are hallucinated in the paper. My biggest concern isn't whether these papers were written using LLMs. It's that some submissions fail to meet the most basic standards of scientific communication and therefore should not be reviewed. Considering this has already wasted some reviewers' time, I strongly recommend introducing AI to flag such papers at an earlier stage. Thanks for ICLR's policy on desk rejections. Hope this can save some time for the responsible reviewers.

flow maps are poppin', but for scientific applications like boltzmann generation, we often still need the likelihood of the flow here we show how to train a flow map with a tractable likelihood, enabling few-step sampling from boltzmann distributions
Introducing SCALLOP 💜 Our new paper accepted at NeurIPS 2026 🐨 🚀 A scalable, efficient way to train few-step likelihood-available flow maps, enabling effective Boltzmann generation! 📽️ project page: tonyauyeung.github.io/scallo… 🔗 paper: arxiv.org/pdf/2606.29110

"People are just combinations of atoms governed by quantum electrodynamics, nothing else." If you try to understand, reductionism is very useful. If you try to perform on social media, reductionism is a disease.
What transformers do is read, write and combine symbols in embedding space. Nothing else.

The main contribution of mathematics to the world is the dialectical process of (1) adding mathematical structure(s) to the world (e.g., buildings made from right-angled pieces) (2) providing methods to PREDICT the behavior of said structures. There is back-and-forth (1)<->(2).
The main contribution of mathematics to the world is creating new concepts, not merely solving problems. It’s an inherently creative discipline. xitter.cf/redaction/status/20841…

DAG people rejoice! The link between understanding and problems is just collider bias from conditioning on solutions.
I disagree with Terence Tao's view of mathematics, which he articulated in a talk yesterday at Caltech (see slide below). Applied math problems are not disjoint from pure math problems. This is not a minor matter. So no, this is not a "more accurate model". It's embarrassing.

Compact G2 manifolds are conscious
An AI system is not a concrete thing. It’s an abstract, mathematical object. Saying that a sufficiently complex AI system might be conscious is like thinking that the number pi might be conscious
