politicians are weapons. some are hail mary grenades. residues of individualism can make us forget this. sometimes the shock, which is real, isn't actually betrayal but rather straightforward estrangement and guilt for forgetting how it's all, at base, power plays

not only programmers, but executives, have rather comprehensible promethean shame they project onto society writ large, and we're all dealing with the scarcity mania of those building and funding their own redundancy
the disconnect between tech bros and the rest of society about LLMs really just boils down to programming. the models write a lot of awful text, but it's genuinely messed up how good they are at writing code. the agent swarms have very significant implications for cybersecurity

Wrote about this back in September. Our X feeds switched over to nonstop posts about WW3 starting because there are now a whole bunch of Verified accounts that make money by psychologically tormenting day traders and crypto bros with poorly aggregated newswires.
what, genuinely, do ppl think is happening with this? feels like a combo of real and justified cybersecurity fears and iran escalations. but also a real algorithmic tweak that feels suspicious this close to the election (and a lot of rando accounts that could be run by any engagement farmer or nation state)

ICYMI, ahead of today’s strikes, I wrote profiles of two of the participating Italian ports: Livorno and Gioia Tauro. I asked workers at these places to explain how they organizing their ports in order to participate. I’m doing the same for Genoa, which will publish after today’s International Day of Action. Here is Gioia Tauro. progressive.international/wi…

Live report: “The port belongs to those who work there, and to this city." Dockworkers at more than 110 ports in 22 countries, across five continents, are striking today against the genocide in Gaza and the arms shipments that sustain it. In Genoa, thousands of port workers and students have joined USB's general strike. Now, after the manifestation started with burning tires in the streets and blocking the roadway to the terminals, thousands are marching through the city. "Today we'll block everything, then march into the port, because the port is our home,” said José Nivoi of CALP. I'll be here reporting on the ground throughout the day as things develop. (This video has captions with the Italian roughly translated.)
LIVER FROM GENOA 🇮🇹 Alex Colston (@re_colston) reports for the @ProgIntl from the picket line, where dockers are refusing to work for war. Genoa is one of 113 ports workers have shut down across 22 countries as part of today's international day of action.

i slacked, often, so i haven't the nostalgia pain you lot have about 4-books/week. i'm unconvinced that was good then, and now, largely because i don't think grad school teaches you how to teach well

school demands a lot from everyone involved. we haven't a transcendent sense of reasonable expectations, given student capacity (which exceeds matters of acumen, attention, and ken); but have we a good sense of professorial expectations, given our capacity (also disturbed by tech

We made the first AI model you can have a realistic conversation with that was trained entirely on speech! Dessa is a full-duplex speech-to-speech model that you can run on consumer GPUs. This is a GPT3 moment for speech.

I'm by no means ideologically committed to reparative reading, but after spending a decade writing a critical history of business slop I basically only want to write about texts I find better (or at least more interesting) than most (or at least many) seem to
