🎷🎷Short Read Russian Roots & the Making of Early Nazi Antisemitism: Documented History 🎷🎷 __________________________________ The claim that National Socialism developed as a purely German phenomenon is incomplete. Archival research shows that anti-Bolshevik White émigrés from the former Russian Empire: Russians, Ukrainians, and especially Baltic Germans, exerted measurable political, financial, and ideological influence on the early Nazi movement in Munich between 1919 and 1923. The central organizational vehicle was Aufbau (“Reconstruction”), a conspiratorial German–White émigré group. Adolf Hitler collaborated with it during the formative years of the NSDAP. This is documented in German and Russian archives and analyzed in detail by historian Michael Kellogg in The Russian Roots of Nazism: White Émigrés and the Making of National Socialism, 1917–1945 (Cambridge University Press, 2005). Kellogg draws on previously under-used materials from German, Russian, French, and Polish repositories. Key figures included Max von Scheubner-Richter, a Baltic German who became one of Hitler’s closest early advisers. Hitler later described him as irreplaceable after Scheubner-Richter was killed at his side during the November 1923 Beer Hall Putsch. Other participants in these networks included Alfred Rosenberg (also Baltic German), General Vladimir Biskupskii, and Fedor Vinberg. Their shared ideology fused racial antisemitism with the conspiracy theory of Judeo-Bolshevism, the claim that Bolshevism was a Jewish plot for world domination. A concrete channel of transmission was The Protocols of the Elders of Zion. While Henry Ford’s later serialization in the Dearborn Independent is well known, Russian and émigré circles played a decisive earlier role. Figures such as Piotr Shabelskii-Bork helped bring the forgery from the former Russian Empire into German radical-right networks after 1918, where it circulated in the same circles that the young Nazi Party frequented. The Russian Civil War supplies essential background. Between 1918 and 1921, tens of thousands of Jews were murdered in pogroms across Ukraine and southern Russia. Forces under Anton Denikin, Symon Petliura, and Nestor Makhno, among others, bore significant responsibility for these killings. White Army units in particular actively promoted the Judeo-Bolshevism myth that later traveled with the émigrés into Germany. Historians including Jeffrey Veidlinger (University of Michigan) and Oleg Budnitskii have examined these mass killings in depth; some historians of antisemitic violence and the revolutionary period have described them as a prelude to the Holocaust. Despite their scale, the events remain relatively underreported in broader public understanding of twentieth-century antisemitic violence. These facts constitute documented historical background and ideological continuity. They do not transfer responsibility for the Holocaust. The Holocaust was solely the agenda, decision, and crime of Adolf Hitler and the Nazi regime. It was planned, organized, and executed by the German state under Nazi leadership. Earlier Civil War violence and White émigré propaganda form a partial ideological prelude. They share neither agency nor culpability. The industrialized genocide of European Jewry remains exclusively a Nazi crime. That distinction is essential.
