That depends on access. Run your own infrastructure, contribute compute or donate inference to OSS maintainers.
If your provider says “sorry, cybersecurity risk” halfway through legitimate security work, that's completely fucked. You need control over your tooling and stack.
Is there a name for the security phenomenon where everyone is caught with their pants down, but each feels less embarrassment because they're not naked alone?
If not, there should be.

I notified a friend working at a big tech corporate about the PHP vulnerability as their entire infrastructure runs on PHP
He answered
"Thanks, I'll try patch it in a few days as I'm Out of Office (OOO) now"
And this is a modern tech company, imagine the traditional companies running PHP
People won't update fast enough and the vulnerability will be out in the wild once the patch hits as anyone can reverse engineer it based on the patch
Considering this, there's gonna be so many sites hacked and so much user data exposed I think
🤯
I pre-emptively disconnected ALL my sites / VPS servers from the web
I'll wait for the patch to hit at 2 PM UTC
If you have a PHP website, probably good to take them down until you patch PHP
69.3% of the web runs on PHP so this is going to be intense!
Good time maybe to buy cybersecurity stocks? (not financial advice)

PHP Security Advisories are out:
RCE via OOM corruption (9.2/10): github.com/php/php-src/secur…
RCE via stale global state (9.2/10): github.com/php/php-src/secur…
Need to upgrade to 8.2.35, 8.3.36, 8.4.27, or 8.5.12 ASAP to mitigate. Updates rolling out now. #PHP
Also please remember, every bit of personal information that gets leaked is there because of a bureaucrat in an office somewhere thinking up ways on how to "protect" you even more from the ability to operate as a free individual.
Kyc is the illicit activity.

Not just PHP. Node.js has also announced security releases for October 21, with HIGH-severity vulnerabilities affecting its 26.x, 24.x and 22.x release lines.
If you run either stack in production, keep an eye on official advisories and apply patches promptly.
Security maintenance doesn't stop at your application code. Your runtime matters too.

"Local is lekker!" @abcptza posted on October 20. The conference site now lists MoneyBadger beside @BitcoinEkasi.
MoneyBadger lets South Africans pay with bitcoin from a Lightning wallet or an exchange account. Its Scan to Pay integration covers more than 650,000 merchants.
The fourth edition runs 26 and 27 February 2027 at Workshop17 Watershed in Cape Town. Tickets cost R1,500 for attendees from Africa, and speaker proposals are open until 1 February.

If you're running a PHP website - a critical vulnerability was disclosed before the announced updates tomorrow.
If you can't shut down your website and wait for the PHP update, feed your AI this prompt:
URGENT: critical PHP security release on 2026-10-21 at 14:00 UTC.
Background
- The PHP security team pre-announced fixes for two critical vulnerabilities (CVSS v4.0 9.2): php.net/archive/2026.php
- Press reports call them remote code execution (CVE-2026-109618, CVE-2026-109619), affecting PHP 5 through 8. Details leaked early.
- Affected versions, fixed versions and official workarounds are published only with the release.
What to do
1. Inventory
Find every PHP install you manage: servers, containers, PHP-FPM pools, Apache mod_php, shared or managed hosting, CLI, and cron jobs. Record the PHP version of each and whether it is reachable from the internet. Work on internet-facing sites first.
2. Interim mitigation (now, before the patch)
Check whether the application uses upload progress: search the code for session.upload_progress and PHP_SESSION_UPLOAD_PROGRESS.
If it does use upload progress, report how critical that feature is and whether shutting down the website is preferable to disabling only the upload progress feature. Do not change anything until you get an answer.
If it doesn't, set session.upload_progress.enabled=Off in php.ini or a conf.d file. Back up each file first, test the config (e.g. php-fpm -t), then reload PHP gracefully.
Verify the value as the web server sees it (a phpinfo page or ini_get through the web), not only with php -i. CLI and FPM can read different ini files.
Confirm the sites still load.
If the config is managed by a deploy tool, config management or a container image, change it there too, or the next deploy undoes it.
3. Patch (after the release)
Read the official advisory for affected and fixed versions. Update every affected install:
- Containers: pull the patched official image. If the image is pinned by digest or exact tag, update the pin. Rebuild and recreate.
- OS packages: apply the security update from your distro or package repository when it is available (it can lag php.net).
- Managed or shared hosting: confirm the provider has patched, or select a patched PHP version in the control panel.
A new PHP binary needs a full restart of PHP-FPM or Apache (or a container recreate); a reload is not enough.
Verify through the web that the fixed version runs and the sites work.
4. Unsupported PHP versions
Versions past end of life may get no fix. Upgrade them, or take them off the public internet or put them behind access control, and flag them as high risk.
5. After details are public
Check web server and PHP logs since 2026-10-20 for the exploitation signs the advisory describes.
Rules
- Back up before every change.
- Follow your normal approval process for production restarts.
- Do not take sites offline without approval.
Report for each site
- PHP version before and after
- Mitigation applied: yes, no, or not applicable
- Patch applied: yes or no
- Anything you could not do, and why

How we hosted the Muslim Bitcoin Summit in London for under £15k.
The unofficial playbook: how we ran MBS26 London for under £15k. We ran a two-day international conference in London on a budget most organisers would laugh at. Four months, ten volunteers, no organisation behind us, and not a penny of corporate sponsorship. Here's exactly how we did it.

1/ NEW REPORT: Billions of advertising auctions determine in real time which ads we see on websites and in apps every day. Our latest research shows how the same data fueling this advertising ecosystem is being used to profile millions of users and silently infect targets with zero-click mercenary spyware, a novel attack technique we call "Adfection.”

This is Pele, my new rendering library for diagrams and charts, compatible with the latest Mermaid syntax.
- 100-500× faster than mermaid.js
- 6× smaller bundle
- No dependencies
- Easy to theme
- Responsive to device width
In pursuit of making Obsidian insanely fast and cohesively designed, I always found the Mermaid library to be too big, too slow, and too hard to theme. Pele will be the new renderer in the next version of Obsidian, but you can start using it now.
Pele [ˈpɛlɛ] is named after the goddess of volcanoes and fire. It's open source under the MIT license. Try the playground!
