Whilst I am resharing this thread I wrote in 2024, please do also read the recent reports led by Patrick Chinnery (medics) and Jessica Corner (NMAHPs) highlighting some of the actions that need to be taken to improve the situation. Both can be found at ukri.org/publications/clinic…
There is a crisis in clinical academia in the UK. We talk of the need to expand medical schools, embed research into the NHS to improve care, & the importance of a vibrant life sciences sector for the economy of the UK, & yet we seem unable to tackle the underlying issues 1/9

Government uplift on DDRB imminent. Here is a cut out and keep table for how long it will take for your pay to catch up with the inflation adjusted 2008 level based on pay award (your pay has been behind already for 17 years, average worker caught up last year). 1/2

🔥Have been incensed about something all day…. Women are the majority of medical students in the UK, yet there are still pockets of the medical profession where dinosaurs are alive, well & roam the earth. Turns out my own clinical specialty (ICM) is sadly one such place…. 1/8

Im sorry this whole national recruitment mess is a complete disaster. Why do we keep on seeing these monumentally damaging errors? I feel so bad for those caught up in this mess with lives on hold @RCRadiologists The whole thing needs a rethink in all specialities IMHO.
Doctors received offers for Radiology training posts at around 3-4pm. They were able to accept these offers on Oriel and received confirmation of acceptance. Offers then began to disappear on Oriel. At 6:30pm they received this email. Simply unacceptable.

Incase you haven't been following this, Thames Water claims it needs £3bn in the next few weeks otherwise it's going bankrupt. Reality is the proposed loan is an initial payment of £1.6bn of which £800m is going to be charged in fees and interest. Yep, if this is allowed TW's customers are going to get screwed. cityam.com/thames-water-emer…

The key lesson of the Trump victory for us is that Labour has to deliver the significant improvement in quality of life that people can feel or we face the rise of right wing populism that has swept America. Half measures won’t be enough.

Danny Sriskandaraja, "Steve Reed talked about he ideology and the question is why are we paying for the ineptitude of the water companies" #BBCQT "We're not.. We paying for the ideology of the 1980s moment of deciding to privatise somethings human's can't do without, water" "Worse still its based on awful economics.. Why would you privatise a service which is effectively a monopoly?" "This is the biggest heist in plain site.. £85 billion has been paid to the shareholders of water companies.. While we have been treated like cash-cows.. How can that be right"

Today @RachelReevesMP has swept away one of the biggest weaknesses in the UK’s macroeconomic framework: the bias against public investment. It’s a very big deal.
