Your post reminds me of a trend from the 1990s that may still be shaping our national reality today. Back then, Makerere University @Makerere admitted only around 2,000 students, securing the absolute top academic talent in the country.
Meanwhile, well-connected and wealthy families often sent students who didn't qualify for Makerere to study at Indian universities instead. Upon returning, many of these individuals were fast-tracked into key positions that ought to have gone to Makerere's top graduates.
I can’t help but suspect that many of the leadership and structural challenges we face today are a direct consequence of placing connections above merit during that era.
The interesting thing about many of the senior NRM politicians trying to preach patriotism to young people is that their own children, who study and live abroad, are dual citizens.
If told to choose between Uganda and those other countries, their children would not hesitate to choose the latter. Like I was telling one of them, first inculcate the virtue of patriotism in your children.

Common Man’s Party SG, Moses Bigirwa, alleges that party President Mubarak Munyagwa has not returned to the party headquarters since losing the 2026 election, an absence he says has affected the party’s operations.
Bigirwa further says Munyagwa took ‘leave’ but has yet to resume his duties since.
He adds that although they see him at several media engagements, he allegedly does not answer calls from the party SG nor does he respond to his WhatsApp messages.
