Some thoughts from @cartainc 2023 VC data, #saastrsummit preso: 📉Minus AI, fundraising is still in a slump 😔 M&A hasn’t saved the day because acquirers and startups can’t agree on value 🪡 Now on other side of economic dip, but pain still ahead due to fall fundraising jam 1/2

⏱️ As a result, wind-downs will continue to rise for the next year 📣 Shoutout to the South, which has doubled their share of VC from 10% to 20% in the past few years! (These are my takes from Carta’s data, @PeterJ_Walker may not agree!)

A new era in startup funding is coming. Founders will couple the growth of select VC with the durability of bootstrapping. Less capital, more self-reliance. It will liberate founders from the VC hamster wheel to build better. Raise Less, Build More: trohan.com/2023/08/20/raise-…

Listening to @DavidSacks and @jasonlk at @SaaStrAnnual predicting mortality rate of seed co’s will be 80% for a while (up from 20% the last few years). Series A crunch settling in hard according to them.

As the SaaS market matures, revenue-first startups are more prevalent, more scalable, and are creating better founder outcomes. Let’s talk revenue growth and how to fund it at #SaaStrsummit this week. Calendly.com/allantear

Years ago, @MizWithers and I fell 😻 with David’s give-first, no bullshit approach to founders and the startup community. Having him as an investor in RevUp is a true highlight 💫
Just made #angel investment #100. Excited to formally back @MizWithers @allantear @revupcapital!

I’ve invested in like 70-something SaaS companies and the number of times that I’ve taken an hour to explain what @jasonlk has explained in a 10 min blog post is 🤯 innumerable. Srsly founders, just read that shit like it’s your job.

Video meetings are great and all, but breaking bread with founders and swapping stories is still magic ✨

Unlike slide decks, cold emails/DMs have gotten 0% better in the last decade 📧 💩 They may have actually gotten shittier 🤔 Why?

Who is this generation’s Michael Stipe? He was so odd and obtuse and Gen X loved him for it.

Founders, this is a real thing. Have seen many small exits that make founders wealthy, and big exits where founders get surprisingly little. know your path, do your math.
An early investment I made, I met with the CEO of a public company that wanted to buy them for $50m The startup hadn’t raised much, they said No Years later, they sold for almost $1B The founders made about the same they would have, years earlier, in the first deal
