📢 My new @NEJM article: "U.S. Research Leadership at a Crossroads" examines the proposed 15% cap on @NIH indirect cost rates (ICRs). This threatens the foundation of US medical research leadership. #NIHfunding 1/6 nejm.org/doi/full/10.1056/NE…

The leaked Merck vaccine data @myESMO underscore the challenges of the orchestrated theater of Act 1, company press release -> Act 2 hold data -> Act 3 public report at major meetings. Act 2, the hold phase, builds excitement for the company & discussion but inevitably there are data shared with KOLs and other stakeholders.
$MRNA rose 276% (🔼mkt cap $40+B) on press release and fell 18% (🔽$12B) on leak.
Seems unclear how this orchestration helps patients or actual research. To the extent there is peer review, it is done by the journals and not the meeting organizers themselves.

This is not really a paper about ixazomib.
Although 6,600 patients with myeloma have been enrolled in ixazomib clinical trials, we still do not know if ixazomib has non-inferior efficacy or safety compared to its predecessors bortezomib and carfilzomib.

I’ll keep it relatively short and sweet. Today marks the start of the DRG lab @WashUOncology. We will continue to study B cell lymphomas using mouse models, cell lines, and patient samples, trying to link genotypes and phenotypes to better understand these diseases and help deliver better care to patients (including diagnostics, response evaluation, and treatment selection).
An immense thank you goes out to my mentors and collaborators, past and present, both here and elsewhere (including Tim Ley, @LabFehniger, @nancybartlettMD, Brad Kahl, Neha Mehta-Shah, @obigriffith, @malachigriffith, @GreenLymphoLab, @AshAlizadeh, and many others), in addition to my family and generous funders.
Right now, we are specifically looking for experienced staff technicians as well as post-baccalaureates (ideally 2 year commitment). Positions for post-doctoral fellows will be open for 2027. Graduate students always welcome! Please reach out with applications or references.

I'm excited to share that I was elected to the @AmerMedicalAssn Board of Trustees to represent the voice of early-career physicians. From payment reform to AI to public trust, it's time to make sure our voices are heard loud and clear!

Big news in pancreatic cancer: Phase 3 trial in metastatic disease found a RAS(ON) inhibitor doubled median overall survival. @DanaFarber’s Brian Wolpin, MD, presents today at #ASCO26 on this major potential advance in one of the hardest cancers to treat.

Yesterday, Governor @maura_healey visited Dana-Farber to announce finalized Division of Insurance regulations that eliminate prior authorization requirements for routine and essential healthcare — establishing important new protections and benefits for patients with chronic conditions, including cancer. She also stopped by the Jimmy Fund Clinic to greet pediatric patients and spoke with faculty and patient advocates to learn more about the research and patient care taking place across the Institute.
We thank Governor Healey for her continued partnership and commitment to improving access to care for patients and families across Massachusetts. Learn more: bit.ly/4uUgvQc

Every cancer drug you prescribe today
was once an NIH grant nobody noticed.
Pharma celebrates launches.
Few notice the 20–40 year runway behind that.
Gleevec took 41 years from NIH-funded discovery of the Philadelphia chromosome → FDA approval.
Behind every “breakthrough” sits a graveyard of failed attempts that made it possible.
Cut that lineage today,
the next Gleevec doesn’t arrive in 2067.
Funded science matters.
If someone says NIH funded science is inefficient,
show them this.

Today’s Supreme Court decision effectively guts a key pillar of the Voting Rights Act, freeing state legislatures to gerrymander legislative districts to systematically dilute and weaken the voting power of racial minorities - so long as they do it under the guise of “partisanship” rather than explicit “racial bias.” And it serves as just one more example of how a majority of the current Court seems intent on abandoning its vital role in ensuring equal participation in our democracy and protecting the rights of minority groups against majority overreach.
The good news is that such setbacks can be overcome. But that will only happen if citizens across the country who cherish our democratic ideals continue to mobilize and vote in record numbers - not just in the upcoming midterms or in high profile races, but in every election and every level.

We are destroying our future and our children’s futures. Funding medical research and should be one of the highest priorities of our generation. Yet we are decimating and dismantling it all while diseases keep rising. Let’s remember who did this.

The cuts aren’t random. They’re targeting on-ramps.
When we zoom into 2026 funding decline by mechanism, the deepest cuts land on new ideas entering the system:
▪️Small R (R03 / R15) ↓81%
▪️R21 exploratory grants ↓73%
▪️Other high-variance mechanisms ↓70%+
If you want to stall science, this is exactly how.
Meanwhile, among other news:
▪️R01s ↓47%
▪️R37 MERIT ↓40%
In other words, the earliest-stage bets are being starved first.
When the on-ramps close, the damage shows up later:
↓ pilot data
↓ resubmissions that mature into R01s
↓ new labs surviving their early years
↓ shared cores that support entire departments
↓ discoveries that ever reach trials
So much remains unanswered.
This week we’re digging deeper:
-which disease areas rely most on these mechanisms
-which institutions are most exposed
-where the first downstream breaks appear (trials, screening, imaging, prevention, survivorship)
If you run a lab, grants office, or cancer center, tell us what cut you want.

The @ASCO guidelines on WBC Growth Factors Support we just published was a fruit of labour and love and collaboration and cooperation, over past 18 months. Many thanks to all the guideline committee members for the hard work and expertise, but special thanks to Dr. Kari Bohlke, senior ASCO staff with expertise in evidence synthesis and my co-chair Dr. Tessa Cigler.
I’m proud of this committee which includes patient advocates, and experts with expertise across disciplines- oncology, hematology, infectious disease, and pharmacy. Our members are also from different career stages and geographic regions.
