Many SaaS 1.0 companies will spend the next decade bolting AI onto what they’ve built. New startups get the luxury to be AI-native from day one. But, very rarely do you see a company caught in between rebuild itself from the ground up. @ericwilliamrea and the team at @PodiumHQ have pulled this off through a herculean effort. So impressive to see this level of dedication to change.
We built a $150M ARR business twice. The first time took 8 years. The second took 2.5. Today, Podium crossed $150M in AI annual recurring revenue. Three years ago, we already had a great software business. Well over $100M in revenue, tens of thousands of customers, and a product we'd spent nearly a decade building. And we decided to start over. The business was performing well. But we believed AI was going to fundamentally change the software industry and make much of traditional software obsolete. As a founder, you pour your life into what you're building. An insane amount of time, sacrifice, and effort. The hard part is not getting too attached to it. When we started building our first AI agents, we had to confront the possibility that much of what we'd built might not be that valuable in the future. That's a tough pill to swallow. But we also realized those same 10 years had put us in a unique position to take advantage of what AI could do for our customers. Instead of protecting what we'd spent a decade building, we decided to bet the future of the company on AI employees that actually do the work for our customers. We massively underestimated what we'd signed up for. We ended up building entirely new operating systems for the industries we serve, from the AI agents all the way down to the systems of record. Now customers run their entire businesses on Podium. Reinventing our product wasn't even the hardest part. We had to reinvent how the entire company operated. When you've been running a company for over a decade, the operational inertia is incredibly powerful. We had to rethink how we build products, how we sell, how we serve customers, and how we run the business. We effectively started a second startup inside an already successful company. And we're still at the very beginning. Today, we have 20,000 AI agents working for our customers. They've helped generate more than $13 billion in revenue for those businesses. And we're barely scratching the surface of what AI will be able to do for them. And we've done all of this while becoming profitable and generating free cash flow. We're building Podium to be around for decades. Huge credit to our team for having the guts to make this bet and the ability to actually pull it off. We still have a long way to go and tons of problems to solve, but it's so damn fun to be winning when the opportunity ahead is this big. In the age of AI, you can either disrupt your own company or wait for somebody else to do it. I'd rather do it ourselves.

I've been thinking a lot about what advice to give founders in this fundraising market. It mostly boils down to "know your audience." AKA if you are buiding in vertical AI and are growing (very) nicely but not >5x YoY, you need to deeply understand what vertical specific investors are looking for and build relationships early.

Our national defense portfolio at @costanoavc is absolutely stacked and we're hiring an investor to work closely with @gsands. We've invested early, when the future is decidedly non-obvious - as we did with @VannevarLabs, Cape, @MuonSpace , @auterion , @KeplerComms, @smackaistack, and Lumbra - before any of them looked like the breakout companies they are today. This is a really special opportunity to join our team, if you or someone you know would be a great fit please apply below or send them our way.

Contracts are central to every business. But the process around them is anything but. The request came in over email. The draft sits on a desktop. Approvals happened in Slack. Nobody's sure which version was final, let alone how it got there. Today, that changes. Meet Ivo Collaborate. The entire pre-signature lifecycle in one AI-native workspace. Collaborate reads every agreement and routes it by the risk you define. It learns from every negotiation along the way—which means your team does too. Early access today. It’s annoying how true this is
One of the fastest ways to change your life is to increase the speed at which you resolve tension. Return the call. Send the email. Have the conversation. Resolve faster. Watch your life speed up.

This is great, particularly #1
A few principles I’ve come to believe about competition: 1) You’re more likely to win or lose because of your own company’s actions than those of your competition. This is particularly true of startups but I’ve found surprisingly true at scale as well. 2) Being copied isn’t always inspiring. But it usually means you’re leading. Don’t waste energy looking over your shoulder. Lead, don’t follow. 3) There’s more to learn from customers than competitors. Consumer markets are hard, but they’re honest. Sales, engagement, and retention are the only scoreboard that matters. 4) There’s a difference between obsessing over competitors and harnessing a deeply competitive spirit. The former distracts you from your true intuition. The latter gives you the extra motivation to do your best work. 5) Creating a market is valuable. Continuing to lead after others copy you is even more valuable. You’re innovative and durable. 6) Remember big, growing markets attract competition. Competition validates the opportunity. Now go win.
