i really hate this developing idea that you don't owe anybody anything and that all social contracts are ridiculous. you can't behave purely in self-interest and then expect generosity from others. if you want to be a part of a community, you have to value the people within it.
I am so sorry for my generation (gen X) slowly turning into weirdos who think ppl my kids' ages (gen Z) have never seen old Disney movies 😭 They failed their own kids & just assume all of us are that bad
Even other writers complain about writers who like some kind of recognition.
Oh, and don't forget, not all fan artists are these amazing people who can do no wrong. I got ghosted by 2 AFTER paying, and both were highly recc'd (which was why I comm'd)
The AO3 situation is bringing to the surface a problem we’ve been sweeping under the rug for years: the double standards applied to fanfiction and fanart.
An artist can draw whatever they want and post it on social media, benefiting from algorithmic favoritism because their content is quick and easy to consume (because people scroll through social media in a matter of seconds. If something takes even one extra minute of their time, they won’t bother)
They can make money, to the point of building an actual career out of commissions (is that legal? Who knows… probably best not to look into it), and receive hundreds of comments or reposts because they deserve it and have worked hard to reach that level (absolutely true, and I agree. But so has anyone else who creates something. I didn’t learn how to sew cosplay costumes or write overnight. It took me just as much time and effort.)
A fanfiction writer doesn’t get that.
Social media platforms penalize:
- External links to websites like AO3.
- Walls of text (so no chapters published as posts)
- Certain words or phrases.
- Posts that don’t get immediately shared or commented on within the first few minutes after publication.
(I could go on, but you get the point.)
So, if we try to promote our work, we’re forced to commission artwork from artists (for a fee, see above) just to grab people’s attention with content that’s quick and easy to consume.
If we dare to ask for comments or any kind of feedback (completely free and anonymous), we get insulted because “well, I don’t want to be OBLIGED to say what I think, or to give a like/kudos/heart/smoke signal or crop circle to that idiot who spent sleepless nights in front of a computer.”
And if we ever dared to ask for even a single euro for our work (which nobody does, because we already know how that would end), just imagine the diplomatic incident that would cause.
So why bother? And don’t come at me with the joy of creating. I’ve been writing novels on my computer for 25 years, and I’m perfectly happy leaving them right where they are rather than sharing them for free with ungrateful people.
This whole situation is bringing one thing into focus: when all is said and done, AI isn’t really the problem.

I debated if I should post this, and ultimately decided to do it bc I'm tired of therapy-speak & armchair diagnosis, esp when it threatens my reputation & relationships. If you can't handle other people having emotions & expressing them, then YOU are the problem.

yall are massive liars. writers are NOT mad for the vanity reasons that yall are desperate to claim (as it makes writers look bad so that yall can try to control the narrative). writers ARE mad about being excluded from communities & having their work reuploaded without consent.+

you guys know how when people download fan art and then post it on their own accounts even with credit to the og artist, the artist still doesnt like that? and everyone agrees with the artist because there's lack of consent? yeah, so why is that different for writers?
The hair pulling & bite marks on Rei 🤤
Eiden getting a lil dommy with Blade?! And that cute little moan?!

My kid said to me several years ago "You should write fanfic of that media." And I was like...but it's just fanfic? My kid disagreed.

For non-Indians, Ganesh is an old fashioned named and next to no Gen Z kid is named that. And THAT person claimed they were 17, and the average 17 year old in India would be stressed as hell rn since BOARD exams are almost up and don't have any time to set up that AI bs.
Feeling the need for fandom positivity. I want to say here that the #NUcarnival fandom has been so welcoming & so good to me as a writer. I don't *need* validation to keep writing. But until AO3 went down, I was getting A LOT of love. Y'all treat us writers so well
I always try to be a little coy, lol. But actually, yeah. Been writing fanfic for 40+ years, long before the internet was a thing. I have 10 tradpub novels. Yes, I'm a fucking good writer.
I'm DAMN lucky cause my fandom is overall REALLY good to creatives. Y'all are appreciated
I will be changing some settings on my work. I've had threats from ppl claiming to be my students (I doubt they are). I have to be extremely careful with anything linking my irl info with my socials, & my privacy is tight.
I work with kids, a lot of whom have trauma. As a responsible adult, I manage my feelings so I don't further harm my students.
Writing, creating, & fandom are my outlets. Seeing so much negativity toward writers protecting our peace doesn't allow fandom to be that outlet.
