“In the early 1960s, when Draper was one of the few people offering early funding to tech startups on the West Coast, he frequently had to start his meetings with entrepreneurs by explaining what venture capital was.” What a legend. RIP. No way these early practitioners could predict what VC could do in this world. But they blazed the trail.

Crime in New York City is a layered topic that confuses almost everybody, because it kind of alternates between right wing and left-wing talking points Layer 1: NYC is actually really safe Layer 2: …because they employ a lot of police and policing works Layer 3: …which shows that multiculturalism can work Layer 4: …at significant cost and Herculean effort
To keep NYC relatively "safe" requires a police force of about 34,000 officers, and 16,000 support employees. In other words you've got a small army on the streets. Something to consider when you hear optimistic stats about a declining murder rate. It doesn't come cheap.

energy is local. stopping datacenter builds, as NY just did (rather than designing win-win requirements and incentives for local communities and builders) is going to lead to some geos having decrepit infrastructure, and some geos benefiting from grid upgrade, investment and economic revitalization. the state needs to “plan” faster. the last time the bureaucracy said they’d study energy it led to a 30-year abject failure to build any (clean) nuclear capacity. a standard nuclear EIS takes 4 years to even get a decision

Since two of these benchmarks are provided by us @Dyno_Tx , I can confidently comment. - The AAV one is uncontaminated private data of a viral trait that we've been measuring for years (i.e. sharing publicly will defeat its purpose), and use it every day (required not sufficient) to design capsids that actually do work in primates. This performance provides a real lift in expertise and resources needed to do viral evolution. - The black-box sequence design challenge is our take-home interview. Fable completely outperforms the best people in the field on given the same exact instructions as humans, again in a private task not seen on the internet. We will release this task publicly at some point. Biology is slow. Real accomplishments take time because the bottlenecks downstream are meaningful. But dismissing both the upside and the risk is highly premature. They've accomplished about as much as you could imagine. In particular, being wrong on the risk is extremely costly. I for one am the most excited I've ever been that bio is going to be transformed, and agentic reasoning is a big part of why. Also the "unknown company" is actually very well known among experts because they are all very smart/accomplished people but are not hype-y on the twitter-verse.
What has Anthropic accomplished in biology so far? Not a lot.

Artificial intelligences do not undergo experiences, do not possess a body, do not feel joy or pain, do not mature through relationships, and do not know from within what love, work, friendship or responsibility mean. Nor do they have a moral conscience, since they do not judge good and evil, grasp the ultimate meaning of situations, or bear responsibility for consequences. They may imitate or even simulate, but they do not understand what they produce, for they lack the affective, relational, and spiritual perspective through which human beings grow in wisdom. #MagnificaHumanitas

The biggest bullshit move by DHS in its history. So everyone on a O1 or H1B visa would have to stop working legally in the US, go back to their country and wait for years of backlog? This includes top scientists in our universities, founders of billion dollar companies (at least 3 just in our portfolio would be affected by the way). And if we look at individual countries it becomes even more bs. Indians would have to wait decades. Russians don’t have anywhere to go (there is no US embassy in Russia, hello?). This is the worst imaginable way to disrupt important work for the country and pretend you’re fighting some loophole.
An alien who is in the U.S. temporarily and wants a Green Card must return to their home country to apply. This policy allows our immigration system to function as the law intended instead of incentivizing loopholes. The era of abusing our nation’s immigration system is over.

Zoning adds $300 - 500k to the price of a home in cities with good jobs. High-speed rail takes 30 years to build. New drugs cost $2B. We pay 5-10x what peer countries do for the same infrastructure. People call this "regulation." It isn't, exactly. It's stranger and worse. 🧵

Countries get the cabinets they pay for. Singapore pays its Foreign Minister about S$1.1m, around US$800,000. The salary is benchmarked to 60% of the median income of the top 1,000 Singaporean earners. That is why you can get Vivian Balakrishnan, former eye surgeon and hospital chief executive, implementing @karpathy's external brain idea (link below). The speech shows deep understanding of AI and fills one with confidence about Singapore's future. The UK Foreign Secretary earns roughly £165,000: the MP salary plus a ministerial salary of about £67,000. The ministerial part is frozen since the crisis and is down by roughly a third in real terms since 2010. This is what a junior Magic Circle lawyer earns. Spain pays its ministers around €85,000. So you do not get a surgeon who has run hospitals. You get a party loyalist who has never run anything.
Singapore’s Foreign Minister, Dr Balakrishnan casually explaining how he built his own AI agent (a 2nd brain for diplomacy) using Claude & WhatsApp integration etc. on a Raspberry Pi “You cannot govern a technology you have only been briefed on.” 🇸🇬

Constantly crying about successful people is a losing position for leftist politicians. It’s un-American, and people aren’t dumb: they see blue cities deteriorate as taxes climb, companies leave, and businesses still deliver products that work. Only one side looks incompetent

nyc provides infinite optionality, which means you can perpetually avoid the commitments that force psychic maturation. this is why when you speak to a 30yo in nyc it’ll almost always feel like you’re talking to a 20 year old. this is primarily due to the fact that most ppl in nyc have never been forced to close doors. & closing doors is literally what growing up is.

In 2025, New York state permitted 37,885 homes. South Carolina permitted 45,564. New York is almost 4× the size of South Carolina, but it built 20% less. Median home price: NY: $599k SC: $376k NY is one of the only states shrinking in population. It's a choice.

Catastrophic forgetting has long been a challenge in continual learning. However, our new study found that pretrained Vision-Language-Action (VLA) models are surprisingly resistant to forgetting!
