Poverty is indeed a policy choice. I made this case in an article last year. Sadly, it remains just as relevant today: dawn.com/news/1927970
Mamdani says, “Poverty is a policy choice”. Poverty in Pakistan has been increasing unabated for years now. Is it a policy choice here too or do we see any serious attempts at poverty reduction? 🤔

This what Sen-elect Abdurehman El-Sayed’s sister has to say! Any lessons for our legacy media?
Today was possible in part because mainstream media’s hold on politics has broken. Support independent media!!

Zohran Mamdani is saying "poverty is a policy choice" and that politicians have a duty to make life affordable for their constituents. A lot of politicians are nervous, because that would mean actually doing the "service" part of public service.

Need a development economist who has feet on the the agriculture soil and not on corporate pavements. A soul full of empathy. Heart ❤️ that beats for average Pakistani. Who can look into the eyes of big boys and say enough is enough. We need to cancel ❌ IPP contracts & much..
FM is a banker & has done a good job of balancing the books thru seeking loans & roll overs. That’s what Bankers & CAs are good at! But poor econ. growth, rising poverty, rampant unemployment- they are not trained to tackle them! A Development Economist is needed to tackle these!

Any lessons to sniff the winds of change here too? Will our politicians too understand the feelings of masses struggling with terrible economic hardships? Will this dejection of the oppressed affect results of future ballots? Just a few thoughts on a lazy Thursday morning…
Amerika'da nasıl büyük siyasi dönüşüm yaşandığından bihaber yapılan ara seçim yorumları çok tuhaf. "Sistemin adamı hepsi ağbii, herkes aynı" "Amerikan seçmeni Filistin'i umursamaz" "Solcular solcu değil; Müslümanlar Müslüman değil" Abdul El Sayed'i 8 senedir takip ediyorum. Sadece onun hikayesi bile yaşanan dönüşümün özeti. 2018'deki başarısız bir valilik kampanyasının ardından sol ve sosyalistlerle iç içe kendi hareketini kurdu, sahadan inmedi. Kendisini geniş kitlelere tanıtan an Gazze soykırımı oldu. Yaz yaz bitmiyor.

Thin chances of $10 billion American loan! Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb said on Wednesday that Saudi Arabia has further extended the $3 billion debt repayment for a 'reasonable period' and said that the country's external position remains comfortable even without a $10 billion US facility. tribune.com.pk/story/2638735…

Supplementary Grants for non-emergency purposes reflect badly on the Budget exercise. This is poor fiscal management.
The Economic Coordination Committee of the cabinet on Wednesday approved supplementary grants worth about Rs380 billion, including Rs275bn for five major water projects facing financial constraints, and around Rs84bn for the country’s armed forces. dawn.com/news/2042201/econom…

I went to study in UK as a teenager & then to US in my 20s. One major thing I learnt to appreciate there was sanctity of the constitution & the people’s vote! So, whenever I see free & fair elections somewhere, it makes me happy for them, but also sad for ourselves … 🤞

The real crisis in Pakistan is not just low incomes, it is the rising cost of living. Wages have grown by 83% in 10 years, yet the average household can afford less than before. Real income is down by 18.8% because prices have risen by 204.3%. This disconnect has changed the nature of poverty itself. It is no longer just about earning less, it is about paying more for food, fuel and transport. While official poverty is reported at 28.9%, 44.7% of Pakistanis are now below the World Bank's $4.20 line. A daily wage of Rs. 1300 that once bought 13.3kg of Atta now buys only 9.68kg. What needs to change: Stabilize prices of essential commodities. Shift focus from nominal wage growth to real purchasing power. Align economic policy with the cost-of-living reality. Until prices are stable, growth will not translate into relief for the people. Source: PBS, World Bank, SPDC

Economics might be the only profession where you can spend your entire career explaining why something shouldn't happen, watch it happen repeatedly, and still get invited on television to explain why it didn't really happen.

They say fear makes even strong men silent. But one day in Uganda, silence almost changed history 🤣 There’s this popular story about Idi Amin So the story goes that Idi Amin once woke up with one of those “big ideas” that only dictators have at 3am. He called an emergency cabinet meeting. No agenda. No warning. Just vibes and danger. When all the ministers arrived, sweating and confused, Amin stood up and said with full confidence: “Gentlemen, I have decided. From today, Uganda will change its name… to IDI.” Silence. Not the normal silence. The kind of silence where even your heartbeat asks for permission to beat. One minister clapped first. Another one clapped louder. Soon the whole room was clapping like they had just heard the best idea in human history. One said, “Brilliant, Your Excellency!” Another said, “Visionary leadership!” One even said, “Sir, this will confuse our enemies!” 🤣 But in the corner sat Walyamungu. Quiet. Serious. Thinking about his children’s future. Amin noticed him. “You! Why are you not clapping? Do you disagree with me?” The whole room froze. One man even started writing his will in his head. Walyamungu stood up slowly and said, “Your Excellency, before we change the name, may I ask one question?” Amin narrowed his eyes. “Speak.” “Sir… do you know a country called Cyprus?” The ministers looked at each other like, “This man is finished.” 🤣 Amin said, “Of course I know Cyprus. What does that have to do with my great idea?” Walyamungu cleared his throat. “Sir, the people of Cyprus are called… Cypriots.” Amin nodded. “Yes.” Then Walyamungu said, “So if Uganda becomes Idi… we Ugandans will be called… Idiots.” Dead silence. One minister fainted inside but stayed standing. Amin stared at him for a long time. Long enough for everyone to start planning their escape routes. Then suddenly Amin burst out laughing. He pointed at Walyamungu and said, “You and I are the only intelligent men in this cabinet! The country shall remain Uganda!” The ministers started clapping again. But this time, it was real relief clapping 🤣 And that is how one brave man saved a whole nation from being called something they did not sign up for. Moral of the story: Fear keeps evil ideas alive. Courage kills them. The silence of good people allows foolishness to grow. But one voice, at the right time, can change history. Sometimes the bravest thing you can do is simply… speak.
